I paid for the Lifetime pass one time, a long while ago.
I thought I might - at some stage (a lifetime is a while)- get something out of this service.
It had great promise.
Unfortunately, the transcoding. It is mandatory, for much of my content. The audio, mainly. Potplayer and VLC have no problem playing anything on the client computer, but the Plex Windows App - it for some reason requires a transcode to aac. Lag and waiting ensues. Frustrated, we return to using other players. Plex sits there pointlessly, full of excellent metadata.
Now, I appreciate that I have already paid, and so as such the Plex team probably feels under no obligation to listen to me. But, seriously - how does it damage your business model to provide us all with an alternative player option? Or an option to turn off transcoding? Surely in comparison to creating an entire media management system, such programming is mindlessly simple.
Plex is transcoding your media for a reason. The media format or the end client doesn’t like something/
If your media is coded/re-coded/formatted correctly it does not transcode.
So I see 3 options .
Fix your media
Get a better client
Stick with VLC
And then there are subtitles - they play there own game!

If you’re using the Plex for Windows app, just don’t.

Please share the XML (Get Info - View XML) for something which does transcode, as well as the details of one device you would like it to play on without needing to transcode and I will help show you how to make this happen.
I have a Synology NAS. It CANNOT transcode. It’s lucky it can transcode audio only. Once you learn what to do, it’s trivial.
