Why did hi-rez audio transcoding get limited?

I noticed that Plex Media Server v1.5.3 stopped transcoding 24/96 -> 24/96 but is now limited to 24/96 -> 24/48 (See v1.5.0 release notes) Would a Plex developer be able to explain the reason for removal of hi-rez audio support? I would love to have it back to listen to my high bitrate audio without down sampling.

AFAIK, when PMS transcoded audio, it always restricted the output to 44.1/48 kHz. Only Direct Play will get you the full resolution.
And Direct Play for audio in higher sample rates and bit resolutions is only available in PMP (at least to my knowledge).

@danjames92 This “fix” was added in the release notes for 1.5.0

(Transcoder) Don’t use sampling rates above 48kHz when transcoding audio. (#6302)

I’m just looking for some additional justification for why this was changed, as it was a feature I was using and enjoying. Before 1.5.x all my 24/96 ALAC files were transcoded into 24/96 FLAC for bitperfect streaming to my chromecast audio.

@mfeingol Since you did the release where this changed, could you shed any light?
