Hello,
I’m fairly new to Plex and can’t figure this one out: I’ve set up 2 filters to automatically create optimized versions of new Movies and Shows recorded by my HDHomerun PVR, but many of the optimized versions end up in the server’s Trash instead of the folder in which it’s supposed to be (Plex versions, which gets created).
Thanks!
did you have Unwatched or X number set when you created the job.
Once something is watched or was the oldest of things created when it goes over the number then it will be removed
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/213095317-Creating-Optimized-Versions
doing a custom filter like this ( leaving unwatched unchecked and the number blank ) should work to keep all future added things
Nope, and I haven’t even watched the shows.
Since I often gets duplicates in the trash I’m wondering if there isn’t a folder permission issue (ex: if the optimized version is first written in another folder and copied only once it’s done).
Oh wait: do you mean that the “limit to” option moves the oldest optimized file to the trash?!
If that’s the case then you nailed it!
I thought that limit was only meant to tell PMS not to start too many jobs.
No the limit is to limit how many episodes you have that are optimized is my understanding.
If you are getting shows moved to the trash, not the optimized versions, you probably have a keep or deletion policy set on the show in the library as @BigWheel mentioned.
One issue I have seen with Plex is if you set these options when establishing a recording they change the library settings but if you later modify the recording settings it does not seem to modify the library show settings so users end up thinking they are keeping episodes after modifying the recording but Garbage Collection keeps deleting them because the library still has the old settings.

yeah sorry i guess i said that weird. yeah the limit means only keep the last X made
That limit option is indeed checked (max. 5 or 10).
If I uncheck it there’s a warning about having too many files to be optimized might take long, etc. Is that limit about ALL the optimizing jobs, or only the jobs linked to that specific title (or whatever filter I have)?
Btw my original files are kept.
Thanks for your help.
(might have 2 more questions on the way!)
Limit should be the show you were setting up.

it is a generic message. if you make a job to optimize everything it will take a long time because there are lots of files likely in user libraries. not because they are all being optimized at the same time in parallel
Ok, so I haven’t figured it out…
Optimized version end up in the trash on a regular basis. It’s happening for all shows/movies, sometimes there are even duplicates. I’ve resorted to dumpster-diving on a regular basis to get the optimized versions back.
My settings:
-All recordings are set to keep all episodes
-I never check the “Limit to 5”
-Plex is set to never delete watched shows (fyi this affects shows/movies I haven’t watched yet)

Q1: is this the limit for that show, or for the entire library?
One issue I have seen with Plex is if you set these options when establishing a recording they change the library settings but if you later modify the recording settings it does not seem to modify the library show settings so users end up thinking they are keeping episodes after modifying the recording but Garbage Collection keeps deleting them because the library still has the old settings.
Q2: How can I correct this issue ( Garbage Collection keeps deleting them because the library still has the old settings)?
Any suggestions are welcomed. Next time I clean the trash can I’ll make a note of what ends up in there so I can check the log files to find out what’s happening.
Hello,
I’m still stuck with the same problem: for some shows or movies, the optimized versions end up in the trash (they are all set to Keep all episodes).
As suggested above, it appears that Plex might not be able to find the recording in the TV/Movie database.
I’m checking the logs, but I don’t know what terms to search to find what’s deleting it.
Here are some entries for a show that got deleted (I searched for:

I still haven’t resolved the trashed optimized file so added it to this new post: Help managing DVR recordings, optimized versions and EPG information
