Hi I am using the Plex app on my Samsung TV (UE55MU6175) and every time i choose SRT Subtitles built-in or external plex ALWAYS converts the container. All of my files are mkv and they all directplay just fine without the subtitles.
If a subtitle stream is selected and is not compatible with the Plex App (which is almost always), then the PMS will “burn in” the subtitle text within the video. This requires a full transcode of the video stream. So to Direct Play or Direct Stream subtitles have to be disabled otherwise the PMS will burn the subtitles into the video image which requires transcoding.
Is there any plan to support non-burn in subs in the app? Like, have the full file sent to the app (as they’re only a few kilobytes usually) and then have it display using the default font in sync with the time code?
It’d be a fantastic feature if doable.

Please define “the app”.
There are several, different Plex apps on the different hardware platforms and operating systems.
Many of them support SRT subtitles without transcoding. (web app, Roku, Android)
Some even support OGS and VOBSUB without transcoding. (Plex Media Player, OpenPHT, Plex4Kodi)
Unfortunately, currently the Plex ‘Smart TV’ app doesn’t belong into either of these groups.
OttoKerner, according to Plex’s website they do no support subtitles via Direct Play under any condition or any version/platform of the client apps, “Enabling subtitles of any type will require them to be transcoded (burned) into the video stream.”
