i apologize if this isnt the right place to ask but why is it that i can have a 1080p file stream it just fine but when i want to stream at say 720p 2mbps or 4mbps it cant do it this isnt for all files but alot of them and yes im sure my device can do it because i have some video files that are 720p max and play just fine but 1080to 720p not working has always puzzled me and im hoping someone can finally shed some light on the subject for me
Probably because transcoding on the fly takes a fair amount of CPU and the system you’ve got the plex media server installed on probably can’t handle the workload. Transcoding comes into play whenever the file isn’t streamed/played as-is so a 720p file will play just fine but a 1080p file transcoding to 720p could very well have problems.
I don’t understand because I have a plex server with dual xeons 2680 v2 with 64gb of ecc ram and transcoding is taking place on a solid state drive while streaming when I look at you usage it’s barely 7 to 10 percent if that so I don’t understand with certain files the only resolution I can stream at is 1080p or 480p and anything I select in between it will show as selected but the actual resolution will be 480p again this is for some files not all
