WHY my Plex is inaccessible from WAN when iMac goes to sleep?!

Gawd, fellows! I have just noticed that 3 (!) years have passed since the last time my Plex server was working correctly!

3 years since I cannot access my iMac Plex server from my iPhone when iMac is asleep (e.t. I’m away from my computer). When iMac is awake - everything works just FINE. (Yes, Im accessing it via cellular network from my iPhone, NOT LAN WiFi) When iMac is asleep - my Plex Server is inaccessible from my iPhone 6 Plus.

Since then I was tweaking it’s settings now and then hoping I will eventually turn ON the thing that spoiled its use 3 years ago. And u know what? I have just noticed its THREE YEARS since I’m trying to tweak my Plex to work correctly!

  1. YES, the Plex server ALWAYS works if I access it from the iPhone from LAN (via WiFi) - even if iMac is asleep.
  2. YES, it worked correctly before - to b more precise in may 2014, during my tourist trip (I accessed my films on iMac airports)
  3. YES, Plex Server worx absolutely fine from outer networks if iMac is AWAKE. If it’s not - iMac is inaccessible
  4. YES, port forwarding is set correctly on my Time CAplsule 3TB router. (I checked it a hundred times)
  5. YES, I have static IP

iMac Retina 2014, macOS Sierra 10.12.5, Plex App for iOS streaming purchased (in 2014 or earlier)

@“Team Wired” Did you change out your network equipment three years ago?

@“Team Wired” Please check this Apple support document.

I know the problem too, have the same on my mac mini, when i want to watch a movie from the iPad. I have solved the problem by using the App “Coca” from the Mac App Store. I start the app in the evening and in the night the Mini goes to sleep.

Why not untick “Put hard disk to sleep where possible” and slide the computer sleep to “Never”. That way your Mac won’t sleep and you can still access Plex. I’ve never had a problem on my Mac with theses settings and Plex. I leave the “Display sleep” setting to 15 minutes to save a bit of energy, but with a SSD as the OS drive it really doesn’t make much difference in power having the Mac Sleep or not - and having it sleep means WOL doesn’t work for Plex (for me).

Yes, but does it matter? I changed ordinary iMac for a Retina one. Clean install, no backups. Time Capsule 3GB was changed by warranty exchange.

Did check. Moved my WiFi connection to the top of the list and - just in case of some magic - enabled “Back to my Mac” funtion @ Time Capsule.

Did I mention that BOTH WiFi AND Ethernet 1GB connection of iMac are enabled. No problem ether - iMac demands WiFi to be enable for geo positioning, else I would u se 1GB twisted pair connection only.

That is a half-solution only. I have just (1h 30min ago) crossed the same problem. Couldn’t access my iMac videos during my way home from work. It happens 1-2 times a month.

Guys, can your fix your service please? This bug makes your service completely unreliable - can’t rely on it during my business trips!

@“Team Wired” You accepted my answer. Was the Bonjour sleep proxy the issue?

Crutches, not a real solution. The problem is that I need access to my videos the most during my business trips. If I leave my Mac on it consumes quite a bit of power and during the power shortages (ordinary occasion in Russia, 1-2 times a month for 1-2 hours) my UPS just cannot hold device AND Time Capsule long enough when its on. (20-30 min @ most with a display off).

Yes - I can store my videos in clouds but what the Plex is for, then?!

Nope. I did accepted it occasionally and didn;t know how to unaccept.
Will report in 1-2 weeks - just moved my wifi network in the top of the list yet.

Can u pleas eclarify how to unaccept answer? Did it occasionally

@“Team Wired” Is your iMac set to Wake on Network access?

Just to clarify: this happens NOT all the time! Plex @ iMac goes offline occasionally - for example, 1-2 times a week. Had-to-track bug… Guy above told that he had same $#@$ @ iMac mini

WOL issues is probably an OS bug/issue rather than Plex. If you get frequent power cuts you can have your Mac automatically restart if power was lost - it’s in the energy saver settings. I do this in the rare event of a power cut so my Mac will just turn itself back on. Coupled with starting Plex on startup my Mac mini serves Plex no matter what.

@“Team Wired” You should test other services using Bonjour Sleep Proxy to ensure the sleep proxy services are working on your network. If all other services are not broken then it will be an issue with Plex Media Server. However if all other services are broken, then you will need to look into what is wrong with your Bonjour Sleep proxy–the network and or the Time Capsule.

You already posted it.

@“Team Wired” I checked for you. Plex does not support Bonjour therefore it does not register with your Time Capsule’s Bonjour Sleep Proxy service.
