i also am tired of plex saying they are going to support linux with player software and then failing to (miserably).
In fairness to Plex, they havenāt said they would support Linux with a desktop player. Theyāve suggested that they may consider it in the future.
I just wanted to start this thread to try and push interest and hopefully get it supported with itās own proper Plex desktop app.
that is not exactly true, they may have not said it this time, but they have promised and under delivered several times. take a look at this thread.
I see what you mean, but they did release to the tools to the community to do their own builds. Thatās not a solution though I agree, as Iād like a fully supported first party solution. But Iām not 100% sure that oneās comparable.
Either way, we both want the same thing, a modern and platform agnostic, officially supported build of the Plex Desktop app for Linux (so a player-linux). Particularly given that itāll be useful for an increasingly larger community, particularly when you factor in users such as ChromeOS.
for sure, I would love to see a linux app, but not going to hold my breath as it seems that linux is always left out
Is there any Plan to release a Linux Client App?
I installed the Windows client today on Linux by using Lutris. Assuming you already have Lutris, steps I took:
- Download the Windows Installer from Plex.tv.
- Open Lutris and click the + in the title, followed by Add Gameā¦
- Give the program a name, and use Wine as the Runner. in Game info.
- Put the path of the installer for the Executable path.
- Click Save.
- Run the application and install. If you want to install elsewhere, do so, however, i used the default (and will reference that onwards).
- Try running Plex after the install finishes. Itāll likely fail to connect to the internet. Then Close.
- Select the Plex Application, and click the configuration button.
- Go to the Game options and for the Executable change the path to the installed Plex player (default is
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Plex/Plex/Plex.exe) - Run the application.
- Profit(?)
Obviously a proper client would be way better though, and this isnāt perfect. I have noticed that the client fails to launch sometimes; starting it after a failure tends to then work. I havenāt investigated why this happens, as Iām just happy to have the full client.
Thatās interesting I hadnāt actually thought to try and see how it behaved under wine. I presume that things like hardware accelerated video decoding doesnāt work properly?
I thought that hardware acceleration did work in Wine (or at least in recent history) though I could be very wrong there. I havenāt tested enough, as I only installed it, and then tested some videos which fail to play properly (subtitles render incorrectly) in the web player, which did work.
Interesting, Iāll have a play with it myself too when I get a bit of time!
I honestly have tried to avoid Wine as much as possible for my Linux workstations
I too wished that Wine wasnāt needed, but too many vendors, Plex included, appear to refuse to produce Linux versions of applications. I completely appreciate that some applications are made for certain OSās but its when vendors only make part efforts that itās infuriating (just like here with Plex Media Server for Linux but no Plex Desktop Player for Linux).
Is this really the only thing you did? Because it does not work for me.
The installer does boot. But the application it self doesnāt.
Yes. Sometimes, for some reason, the application doesnāt start the first time but a few attempts gets it to start (I havenāt bothered trouble shooting this yet), but apart from the steps I listed, nothing else.
Okay, I got a bit further. I can now see the ābootā/plex screen. But I am now stuck. Which version of wine do you use?
Iām using lutris-5.7-3-x86_64.
So, with the new Live TV feature, Linux users are now basically being put over the coals (no fault of knapsu) as the only way we can access the new features is via the web interface; which for me hasnāt rendered subtitles correctly all year, and not a single Plex staff member has responded to the topic I made on it.
Think it might be time to cancel my Subscriptionā¦
I too have enjoyed the self-hosting experience with plex but was surprised to find Plex does not have native app for Linux. Well, it wouldnāt be as bad if not for that HEVC cannot be streamed without converting on web browser and 80% (by size) of my media are in that format.
This is actually what initially brought the problem to my attention, not being able to play back HEVC is a real pain, particularly when remote.
