Sorry for the newbie like confusion…what is “dca”?
Weird. Second file was played about 10 minutes after first file. All Plex, server, Xbox, TV settings remained the same.
Thought the first file was 5.1 but then saw 7.1 error in the log. Hunted down second file that is 6 channel AC-3. Will try again with the same file next chance.
tried second file and another file. both say “no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/hevc/dca” - same as all the others.
what exactly does “no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/hevc/dca” mean? if I don’t know what to do then I can’t fix it. otherwise it is not possible to direct stream with Plex.

It means that file is not direct playable because that container/codec combination is not supported. In this case dca is the issue.
DCA is aka DTS
If your tracks are 7.1 DTS, Plex doesn’t play them direct., as Moussa described previously.
Also, the article I linked previously specifically states only two models of the XBox One are capable of playback at 4k.
All others will be transcoded to 1080P, which could also be affecting your direct play capability.
Oh, and don’t just copy paste logs into forum posts.
Zip them (Windows compressed folder or Winzip or, my recommendation, 7z (but use the zip not 7z format))
Then attach actual zip file.

on double checking, second file has one audio stream, DTS-HD. ok, that’s bad.
first file has 5 audio streams, all AC-3. is more than one bad?
both files show the error “no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/hevc/dca”
tried with a third file. same ‘weird’ log entries as yesterday, no MDE log entries. this is becoming a lot of work for what appears to be no benefit. after several days still cannot direct stream anything. and no idea why.
obviously 4K has a long way to go.

I have the Xbox One S. recently succeeded in playing 4K HDR using Vudu app on Xbox. so now we know the box & TV will do that much.

yes, crash occurs almost immediately. did it three times. will log and upload at next opportunity.
I think you’re possibly confusing terminology. Your http/mkv/hevc/dca file will not direct play, because the audio stream needs to be transcoded, but the video stream should direct stream. The video stream _should _ pass through untouched. What makes you think it’s being transcoded down from 4K to 1080p? HDR is not yet supported in the app.
The no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/hevc/dca line simply means that the file cannot be given as it is to the player because it has incompatibilities, and we need to do some work before passing it to the client. In this case we need to transcode the audio stream from dca to a compatible audio codec, but copy the video stream as it is, and bundle them together in a new container. I hope that explains.
thank you so much! yes, I did misunderstand. when everyone says transcode I think of both audio and video. do not recall seeing anyone say ‘transcode the audio’… maybe we could make up new words - transaudio and transvideo
what does it mean when there are no MDE entries?
the solution you describe seems to be the best possible solution. why do more processing than necessary? most of the TV and Xbox apps play nothing or refuse to play if the codec is unrecognized. now Plex is beginning to look like the solution I have been looking for. thank you.
to be honest I have no idea if the Xbox is up-scaling or not. and not sure how to find out. the output to the TV is fixed in the display settings. mine is set to 4K and 10-bit, recognizes TV supports UHD and HDR (not sure how 8-, 10-, or 12-bit really effect the display. picked 10-bit as that seems to be the ‘generic’ bitness for HDR10 files.)
I have a similar issue. I’m using a Shield TV and when i playback HDR encoded 4K MKV HEVC files, they will playback fine as long as video and audio are direct, but when the audio is in DTS or anything that isn’t AC3, the first few seconds of video come out ok but then the video is only a pretty imitation of a rainbow consisting mostly of green. I have video files that have both 7.1 and 5.1 audio streams and i can switch between them during playback and it will switch from working fine, to a green blob of colors when the audio needs to be transcoded. Is there any workaround?
@koolice - if you haven’t already, I strongly suggest you search, and if no similar issue found, create a new post in the Shield TV section of the forums. Your device, and your issue, have no shared denominator with the original topic of this thread other than the type of video. (4k mkv 7.1)
