Is it an mp4 container? The article mentions mpeg4.
It’s not quite clear on what that means.
Your log indicates mkv.
Additionally, states direct play is disabled, do you have any setting in the Xbox that purposely disabled direct play?
downloaded trial of Wondershare 4K converter. converted MKV samples to MP4. HDR did not survive conversion so that is not going to work. converting everything to MP4 would probably not happen anyway.
have other ways to play these files but would prefer Plex with my current setup.

actually I think HDR will be more widely available. anyone can easily buy 4K TVs with HDR but buying into or upgrading the sound system to Atmos or DTS ma is a whole 'nother thing

I agree that HDR is more important. I’m tempted to put non HDR versions of my files up instead of letting plex optimize them. too much color is lost. Though I don’t want to do that because of the lack of time I have to do this stuff. Plex is my magic solution in the house.

A few seconds into playing a 4k HEVC, the video stops, buffers then continues. I haven’t sat down to watch any of these videos all the way through because without HDR it’s not a good experience. The web client shows it’s direct playing but the xbox client shows something else. RIght now I can’t remember what the xbox outputs and I’m not near my xbox to test.

@megabite That shows the video as direct streaming. Your audio codec is not supported and will always be transcoded. Your second set of logs don’t show anything, they’re missing the relevant lines.

How do I know it is the codec?

Searched second set of logs again. That is ALL that is in the logs referencing the file played. What “relevant lines” do you need?
Here is what seems to be a bracketed section of the second log. Can send you the whole log if that will helps. I played the movie for 20 seconds or so then stopped. Notice “Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected…” Seems to be saying it was streaming.
DEBUG - Content-Length of “full path to movie” is 8013191775.

Well in this case you would need to look further down in the logs to see what the decision engine results are. It will tell you that audio needs to be transcoded. In this case I can tell you from the information there because I know that codec is not supported.

It means that file is not direct playable because that container/codec combination is not supported. In this case dca is the issue.

Not at this time.

Are you sure logging is enabled in the app? You would see lines containing MDE.
