Does plexamp know not to download a song again if it’s already been downloaded in another playlist?
Server Version#:1.29.2.6364-6d72b0cf6
Player Version#: Plexamp 4.5.3
I don’t know what the case is for the regular Plex app is but I can confidently say it will download multiple copies of the same track with PlexAmp, resulting in more storage use on your device.
Elan said something something something about how PlexAmp does not check what’s been previously downloaded in other playlists and will download a separate instance of the track as many times as needed for each playlist that it appears in.
Oh dear. That’s not good
Elan:
I’m not sure what you’re looking for here. The offline system is designed in a particular way, for specific reasons. I’m happy to clarify user-facing functionality, but the design itself of the downloader isn’t of particular relevance to an end-user.
Elan:
It’s really straightforward: storage efficiency wasn’t a priority when we were designing the offline system. We wanted something which was simple, reliable, and fast.
Why didn’t we design for this particular storage efficiency? Because:
- The majority of scenarios don’t have much, if any duplication.
- Where there is overlap, the storage wasted is almost always too small to be an issue.
There you have it.
Forum Thread where these excerpts came from:
This seems like a good reason to rethink the design of the download system.
I’m not sure what the reasons are behind the system, but I would like a better one that did de-dup and didn’t have download limits, instead of continually being told “it was designed for a specific reason”.
That way if someone hits a transformer near my place and knocks my server offline while I’m on a Thanksgiving roadtrip, I can still listen to all my liked songs…
PS: Love the app and keep up the good work, the offline/download system is the only thing that is a thorn in my side.
… “solution” smh
Hey, don’t shoot the messenger. It’s not MY fault. It’s Elan’s. And don’t think I’ve been P’d off with his response because I’ve also thrown my anger and frustration out on the foundation in which PlexAmp is on. It looks to be a wonderful application with a SERIOUS amount of foundational flaws at its core, and that’s despite it being rebuilt from the ground up.
I wasn’t calling you out. I quoted Elan. I’m as frustrated by this as anyone. With every update there seems to be some kind of new functionality, yet they can’t address the issues that we’ve been seeking a solution to for quite some time.
I like the app a lot, but it does have a couple of underlying issues that are irksome. Form over function, in many cases.
