MOST Android devices has been able to handle the .ass subtitle rendering, referring to iOS supports the .ass subtitle without transcoding.
The real situation is I don’t want to force transcode my 4K HEVC 10Bit movie just because of the double language .ass subtitle. I know there is third party tool like PlexKodiConnect, but it is totally not a smooth user experience by switching apps and skins.
Even without the .ass subtitle styling support, but at least make the first step!! I want the option there!! ![]()
Set Burn Subtitles = Image Formats Only.
Plex should treat them basically like SRT. You’ll lose color, position, etc, but they should direct play.
On Android devices, Plex uses ExoPlayer, part of Android, as the underlying video player. Unfortunately, ExoPlayer currently has poor support for ass subtitles. There is an open issue you can follow on GitHub.
Cool!! I’ve tried Image Formats Only for many times, it’s buggy, it randomly misses every other line and the styling in .ass file should be the problem. I have to say that it is still not the solution.
I totally get it is about ExoPlayer… maybe this will sound like an unreal suggestion: giving up the ExoPlayer and implementing the way much better open-source player like MPV, like what you used to use for Windows (and gave up).
MPV is used in Plex for Windows and Plex HTPC.
Scan the Plex HTPC feedback thread for “mpv.conf.”
