Windows 10 and Plex Media Server freezes computer when running

I have the same symptom, though I haven’t diagnosed it. After a day or more of Plex Media Server running, my PC becomes unresponsive (no keyboard nor mouse activity), and the screen is black. My only recourse is a hard reboot.

Here is my log from when I think my PC locked up, if it helps.
Log just shows Plex Media Server being idle and doing network checks every few minutes - appears to be every approx 15 minutes

You need to check drivers . look at windows event log to see what happened last. Check cpu temperature, There are programs you can download and use for that. Ensure windows up to date.
Plex Media Server itself would not cause a system lock out

@“mike.gover@gmail.com” - just noticed that you a forum topic that you raised on this. You should avoid double posts as that wastes time. I will close your duplicate post here

The only out of date driver was for my PCMCIA card reader. The PC is less than two months old. All windows updates are current. I appreciate your opinion that PMS wouldn’t cause a system lock out, but when I shut down Plex, the computer can run for any amount of time without issue.
For the last time I had to hard reboot my PC (yesterday morning at 6:00am), there were no notable system events.
As for security events, nothing, except that the last one was at 12:32am, and no more until I rebooted the system.
There was an application event that I’ll mention, though I can’t say if it’s related to the problem. The application named ‘dbupdate’ stopped working at 11:33:37pm, approximately one hour prior to the last security event, both preceding the reboot.

That should be looked into in conjunction with server log files with debug enabled to see what the last thing was and at what time in any of the logs and also together with the system and application event logs in windows to see what the last thing was.

Windows freezes are best investigated with help from forums such as http://www.tenforums.com/ or http://www.eightforums.com/ or http://www.sevenforums.com/

Has anyone ever figured anything out on this issue?

I started having the same issue about 2 months ago. At the time I figured it was something with my OS (possible malware or something) so I installed a brand new disk drive (2 TB hybrid), installed a clean Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) from a new ISO and updated all drivers. Without Plex installed the system ran fine and without any issues at all for several days. Satisfied that the OS was stable and the new hardware was working I installed Plex.

At first all seemed fine. I did not add any libraries at first and just let the core program run. Again, it ran fine. I started adding libraries for my movies, tv shows and music. Initially it ran well. As I added the libraries, Plex scanned for files and began performing the expected matches. However, shortly after completing the initial loads the same problem starting occurring. The PC would lock up and become 100% totally unresponsive. After a hard reboot, the system would come back up but I noticed that performance was far below the levels seen prior to Plex being installed. And, within 15 minutes of rebooting the system would freeze again. This process was repeated multiple times with the same results. Eventually, I started the PC in safe mode and uninstalled Plex.

After uninstalling Plex the machine has run great with no issues. There is definitely some issue with Plex on Windows 10 but I do not think this is a Windows issue since the machine runs with no problems without Plex installed.

I do have a large library of media files so it would seem that either when Plex is attempting to load its database of media or scan for new media that it is crashing either due to a heap issue or something within the app.

The server ran fine with 16 GB of RAM for months after upgrading to Windows 10 and since that machine has been upgraded to 32 GB of RAM so it is not a resource issue on the machine either.

I like Plex and would like to have it running on my system again but to date I can’t because the application freezes shortly after startup. With a frozen machine I can’t stream data or even view media files through the UI. Without Plex the machine is perfect but with Plex it is a large paperweight.

I have the exact same problem running plex media server on my Intel I7 NUC, the NUC just stalls and i can’t find anything in the log file causing the problems. What can possibly go wrong here, all drivers are up to date?

If it is Windows that locks up then please see my suggestion earlier on which forums to use for getting help

I’m getting the same behavior on my HP server running windows 10. Before I install Plex, it runs for days, with Plex installed it locks the server in a matter of hours. I am thinking of moving Plex to a hypervisor.

You appear to be still running version 1.3.4 - there is a later public release version 1.4.4 - available from https://plex.tv/downloads

So everybody has Window 10 issues?? PMS is working fine? How is it then that most of these people including myself can remove PMS and the server will run days without issues? As soon as PMS is installed it crashes after a day??

Any windows crash needs to be investigated as a windows crash and that would be the starting point

May be the CPU is overheating

For Windows crashes best to get help from forums such as https://www.tenforums.com/ for windows 10. There are equivalent forums for windows 7 and 8

[Solution] for CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT error.

I want to bump this thread to say I believe I’ve discovered the issue.

After search the web, again, (months ago), I ran into a post discussing overclocking of the CPU.

I’ll be the first to say, I didn’t overclock my CPU. *However, it got me to realizing something: ASUS motherboards have a feature built into their BIOS that allows you to fine tune your computer for three settings: Optimized for Power, Balance, or Optimized for Speed.

A lot time ago, I’ve set this for “Speed” since I did gaming - I want speed. I suspect this was ASUS overclocking my CPU. I disabled this, resetting to default factor settings, “Balanced,” and this problem? It went away!

It used to be that we couldn’t get through a movie without a CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT crash. Now, we’ve officially watched over a dozen movies and not a single crash since. It appears this was related to overclocking, just ASUS’s “official” method.

So, solution appears to be: check our BIOS settings. Make sure you’re not overclocking, even when it’s not called “overclocking.”

This worked for me.

ASUS on board overclocking set back to normal from “Speed” made the freezing/BSODs stop.
