With P400, Core i5 2400 vs Core i3 4130?

Hi—

I’m wondering if anyone has an opinion on what might be better. I am running a smallish Plex server for friends and family and I have some spare parts around.

I have a P400 I am using to help transcoding. I am using the patch to unlock it. With the P400, do you think a Core i5 2400 would be better than a Core i3 4130? The motherboard I have for the i5 is an Asus P8P67 LE and only has PCI-E 2.0.

Any opinions on Windows vs Linux in this setup? I’m a little concerned about the current issues with Nvidia GPUs in this thread.

I know all of these parts are old, but I’m trying to work with what I have before I buy more stuff.

Both CPU’s are fine considering they’ll only be used for transcoding audio & subtitles if needed, Video will be done via the P400 & it can handle quite a few 1080p transcodes with ease. I have a similar setup, Win10, I7 2600, 16GB Ram, Quadro P400 with the Nvidia patch to unlock. My CPU rarely goes above 10-15%, P400 rarely goes above 40-50% with 4-6 1080p transcodes (EDIT: Can handle multiple 1080p x265/HEVC transcodes too). This kind of setup is perfect for anything up to 1080p with decent audio (DTS & so on), Anything past that (4K with Atmos) will most likely fail/struggle unless direct played.

That’s interesting–I am currently using the i3 4130. I am looking into swapping because my CPU usage is often higher than I’d like (50-10%). I’m not sure if this is because of the issues with plex not using NVENC/NVDEC correctly or my configuration or the i3.
