WoL to wake up NAS or PLEX-PMS

I use my WHS Server as PMS for Plex, having also the main bunch of movies stored there on my RAID. Additionally, I have a Buffalo NAS for Music, Photos and exotic movies.

As a Server with ~10TB + Quadcore+2xHDTV SAT consumes some power, I try to keep it standby as much as possible.

In PlexBMC there is an setup-option for WoL already implemented. I really miss that feature within the other clients (iOS, Android, Win, Web).

Currently I have to leave my PLEX Client and WoL via a separate App before coming back to browse my movies - This isn’t very WAF facilitating.

I think this would be a great feature without big implementation efforts. Being able to configure multiple WoL commands would be even better (to wake up different Devices;-)

+1 - agreed!

I have a similar set up. Eventually found a low-ish power nas but then wanted to run a plex server with transcoding power. Plex has great WAF here - having the ability to wake the plex server within the plex client would be th icing on the cake for me.

+1 for this.

It would be great to have the server start up anytime a client tries to access it.

I just want to bring this thread up again as the development of teh PLEXPass Android is moving forward so well, but I'm still missing this feature. It shouldn't be too difficult to include a WoL Option into the Setup (in DreamPlex it is already implemented and working well;-)

Are there issues from dev.-side which hinders that feature?

+1 for this feature also. Been searching through the forums looking for WOL threads and have been disappointed to see that the devs seem to have ignored most of them. Could we get some feedback from the devs please?

Bump!

This would make my wife’s life easier!

3 years later and this feature isn't implemented, how unfortunate :(

WOL and also running Plex as a service on system startup would be ideal; that is setting the PMS to run as soon as the host system powers on (e,g by WOL) before even manually signing into an account. The Logitech Media Server does this.

Agreed plus 1

+1 this is a must!

WOL would be possible to implement on plex clients if they are same local network as the plex server.

If you access your plex server from outside your network (eg mobile phone on 4g) then it would be nearly impossible to implement this as a feature, as you have to setup an internal device that is already on (eg router) and tell the internal device to send a WOL. Most routers aren’t setup to allow features like this (a 3rd party app telling the router to wake another device).

If you have an DD-WRT router it is possible to set this up yourself (but it aint easy) -> https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/976696

This already works if you have a particular setup. I have PMS running on an iMac that supports wake from sleep. I also have an AppleTV, which acts as a bonjour sleep proxy. When my iMac goes to sleep, PMS registers a bonjour service at port 32400 as can be seen in Bonjour Browser. Any client on the local network will wake my iMac. With the AppleTV acting as a sleep proxy, i can use a client thats not on my network and my iMac will wake. I’m not sure how this would work in the Windows world but it works for Macs.

I know that this can be done by using 3rd party apps on iOS or Android. But some app platforms (like the SmartTVs) don’t provide access to the required protocols. And it’s not user friendly to fire up another app just to get the other Plex app to work.

So why not integrate a WoL feature right into the plex.tv server backend?!

Like this example (Wake On Lan over the Internet) demonstrates, it is possible to send magic packages from a webpage. I’ve used this webpage countless times to wake up my two Plex servers (running on a Windows 10 PC and Qnap NAS) when I’m not at home.

Bump. Seriously… Why do Plex clients not have this feature built in already??? Isn’t moronically simple? I have all the right WOL settings configured on my Win 10 PC that’s running my Plex server. I use an iPhone app that sends a magic packet over my local network, and also over the internet straight to my Public IP over port 9. My router is set to forward this port to my PC. It works perfectly on the local network or remotely from anywhere (in the app, there’s literally a button for “Wake LAN” and “Wake Internet”). WHY does Plex not also have the option to configure client apps to send a similar magic packet while trying to queue up a server when first opening the app? It just seems so simple and useful… I could work exactly like the standalone WOL apps… right?

There is another, apparently “official” feature request for this: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/48706/wol/p1
I’m sure Plex is all too painfully aware of how ineffective forums are for gathering customer feedback, but in any case, there is one more thread to vote on in the hopes of catching the developers’ attention.

Cheers!
