Would this work for a Plex Server?

I currently have a large tower with multiple drives, way too power hungry, etc. so II am looking at getting a smaller dedicated server for Plex, found someone selling this for pretty cheap on craigslist so I’m wondering if it would be enough with Windows 10 on it. I don’t do 4k and my files are rarely over 2 gigs, usually only 1 stream at a time, on rare occasion 2 streams…

Intel NUC BOXNUC5CPYH w/ Celeron N3050 processor:

  • 4GB RAM: Crucial CT51264BF160B
  • 128GB SSD: ADATA ASP600S3-128GM-C

Any advice is appreciated!

Looks like this CPU has a passmark score just north of 800. It is recommended to have a Passmark score of 2,000 or better for each single transcoded 1080 stream.

If you do some prework to your files to make them compatible with your end Plex client device, you might be able to get away with Direct Play on this setup.

OK, thanks for the info. Ive used Plex for quite a while but never got into the finer details, just more of a plug and play guy.

For my files, would remuxing be enough or would I have to do a full encoding with each file with something like Handbrake? From my understanding remuxing just changes the container and is quicker where reencoding would take quite a while longer.

It probably doesn’t really matter how you get there, as long as the specs of your final file are compatible with the playback device. If you have a current setup, testing for Direct Play is free.
