Dumb question - RE: Separate computer for server

I have purchased an Intel NUC NUC6CAYS to act as a 24/7 server because originally I was using my gaming PC and I didn’t feel comfortable with leaving it running 24/7.

My dumb question is, if my hard-drives that have my content on are connected to my gaming PC, and it is turned off, and I have my plex server set up and running on my NUC, will it still be able to access the content or will I need to connect my hard drives to it as well?

Thanks

You’ll have to connect your HDs to your NUC.

Final question - Is an Intel NUC, NUC6CAYS, Quad Core 1.5GHz Celeron J3455, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 32GB Storage, Arches Canyon, Win 10 Home 64-bit going to be enough to stream 1080p that is NOT local? So outside of my network.

Look up the Passmark score for your processor. In typical situations, a Passmark score of 2,000 is needed for each 1080p stream you plan on hosting. If your processor has Intel QuickSync built in (Google is your friend), this score doesn’t matter as much.

If there is a compatibility between your file and the end client device, then the file will direct stream and it really won’t tax your processor at all.

The final hurdle is your internet upload speed, which, can kill even the best powerhouse server’s ability to do anything.

Hope this helps.

Doesn’t matter if you are streaming within or outside your network. Technically it’s both the same.

Your CPU Mark has about 2000 CPU Mark. That’s barely aedequate. Also I’m not sure if a Celeron has HW acceleration. Would have to look it up …
My advice: get more powerfull hardware.

Thank you for the help guys, can you recommend me a Mini, but affordable PC that will do the job?

Our NUC expert recently posted results of the NUC type: NUC7PJYH
it does 2 transcodes of full UHD remuxes (4K HEVC to 1080p AVC) at once
The CPU supports these codecs in hardware.

Small, silent and powerfull. An entry-level NVIDIA GPU is optional.

There are lots of people that are happy with the NVidia Shield Pro as a server. I went to Best Buy and got an i7 open box buy that’s working just fine (not mini).

Thank you for this,

could it theoretically handle more transcodes if its 1080 to 1080?

Maybe, but I cannot tell you for sure as I haven’t tested it myself.

Could you please post a link to these results as I’m interested in getting a Gemini-Lake / Bean Canyon based NUC for Plex Server so interested in the real-world hardware transcoding results.

There wasn’t much more detail than what I already said above: 2 concurrent transcodes of UHD remuxes.
