Would this work for server? HP DV6 i7

  • 2nd generation Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor 2.00GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.90 GHz
  • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 DIMM), 1 TB (5400RPM) Hard drive
  • Radeon HD 6770M switchable graphics with 1024MB GDDR5, 15.6" diagonal High-Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768)

What are you expecting from this as a server? Without details regarding your use case, it’s pretty much impossible to tell you whether this will work for you.

I would like to be able to steam 1080p maximum 2 at once. I know 4k is out of the question.

Make sure it has gigabit ethernet.

If your media will be on external USB drives, make sure it has a USB3 interface.

You should be able to direct play to multiple devices, including 4K.

You can transcode one or two 1080p streams. No transcoding 4K, but that shouldn’t be done anyway.

You don’t mention which Plex clients you’ll be using (FireTV, SmartTV, etc). Be aware that using subtitles on some Plex clients can cause video transcodes, especially if the audio is also transcoding.

What kind of CPU do I need for my Server?

CPU PassMark = 5530

Do you already own the device? If so, just go ahead and test if it works.

Also, what sort of content do you have? The CPU should be able to hardware transcode h.264 content so you might be able to use that feature, keeping your CPU from getting too hot. h.265/HEVC won’t work for you, see Using Hardware-Accelerated Streaming.

All my media is on a Seagate 8tb hdd USB 3.0 the laptop has usb3.0 and it would be wired to ethernet. Not wifi. And streaming on android smartphone (note9), windows 10 laptop or PC and Samsung smart TV. Not all at once.

No I don’t own it. Guy asking $20 not much of a loss if it dont work.

Give the laptop a static (fixed) IP address or tell your router/DHCP server to always assign the same IP address. Plex Server works better when it has a static IP address, especially if you want to stream to remote clients.

For PC, use Plex Media Player instead of Plex Web. PMP is much more robust and will give you a better quality playback than using a web browser.

For your media, follow Plex Media Preparation Guidelines. Plex is picky about naming and organization, especially with TV shows. This is so Plex will correctly identify movies, shows, etc and download the correct artwork, etc.

Go for it. Like you mention, not out much if it does not work.

I already have it set up running right now but it’s on my daily PC that I game on. So I just wanted to give it it’s own system. And take the strain off mine. All my media Is organized and good to go.

Gotcha. Looks like you’re set. Cheers.
