Its Christmas. XBL and PSN are being DDoS’d to death right now. All i want to do is watch some movies. But the greedy nature of this $50/year plex app.
Tell me. Why is it necessary to have an internet connect to stream media over my LAN network? Please fix this or start issuing refunds.
Same issue here, Plex will not work without XBox live connection, server is in my house... Time to break out the Google TVs since they work regardless..
The reason for this is because it's in Plex Pass Preview and they need to verify via the internet if you have plex pass!!! If you don't want to have this problem, wait until the public release and quit paying for the pass. How is it Plex (or MS' for that fact) that a bunch of ■■■■■■ are purposely causing problems. Be mad at the right people for gods sake....
Really pathetic these guys doing a lame DDoS on XBL/PSN, I'm sure lots of kids got consoles for Christmas and these guys crapped on their day, and I can't watch Die Hard! Grr..
Hopefully this online requirement is gone once the preview ends.

Merry ****ing Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too.
Hope you don't talk to your children the same way. Community needs less people like you. Don't come in here demanding stuff like this. If you took a milisecond to search the forum you'd see this has already been discussed. Use the search button.
I'd personally remove you from Plex and keep your money if I ran Plex.

The app didn't have to check for a valid PP on every start up of the app. It could be once a day or week. That would solve this kind of problem.
I wasn’t able to use plex this morning because of the XBL DDoS, and I can’t use it now because my internet is out…
While OP’s language was uncalled for, I tend to agree with the sentiment. I paid for a lifetime plexpass subscription, my server is local, my content is local, but I can’t use the service because of always-on DRM.
Surely there is a way to cache licence validity (especially for those on lifetime) so we don’t need to be constantly connected to XBL to use this (offline) service…
I had the same issue as well. Internet required to stream from my own local library. This is really putting me off of paying for the plex pass. I don't want my internet connection to potentially be a limiting factor when friends are over to watch movies. May have to find another solution if this isn't changed.

In addition, the Xbox One has limitations on Apps preventing Plex from the detecting the server locally, it needs to connect to Plex.tv to actually find your server for the app to connect to.

This is true, but I'm guessing(hoping) that by the time this goes full public they will have a way to cache this for at least the time span of internet outages and crap like this happening.

Sure - but why does it it have to do this each and every time Plex is started?
It's pretty simple to store the locally found servers and present them even if XBL/Internet/whatever is having a problem.
You appear to be knowledgeable about what an Xbox App can and can't do. Are you a dev or know where such limitations are documented?

Don't know why it isn't cached or why they don't have an option to manually enter the server address. But as adam pointed out above, we might not see this functionality until the app leaves the plexpass preview stage because one of the only ways to verify your plexpass account is to connect to plex.tv.
This was posted by elan on the comments page for the Xbox releases:
Unless you meant without Internet access, in which case that’s not possibly because the XB1 app doesn’t have the ability to do local network discovery.
After reading other boards about app developement it seemed more likely that the restriction wasn't based on a lack of knowledge to do it but rather a restriction on the apps themselves. But, I am not a dev and I haven't bought the dev kit so I could be wrong.
