X264 vs x265 (or h264 vs h265) sizes?

Opinions please !

My thoughts are a 2gb (size) h265 movie should be around the same quality as a 4gb h264 movie? (with all other settings the same)

Right?
Wrong?
Close?

Oh heck. You just opened the universe up.

Video compression cannot be reduced to such simplistic formulas.
You can always only use estimates and ‘average’ factors due to the complexity of the process and the number of factors which all influence the bandwidth/quality ratio.

What one user perceives as ‘acceptable’ quality, is ‘blurry’ to the next user.
And these perceptions usually do change if the user gets a new (often larger) screen.

Your estimate may be valid for a big portion of movies (if they don’t have much film grain or lots of explosions and action sequences).
But only, if you are making the HEVC version from the full-quality Bluray rip source.
If you’re instead using the already severely compressed 4GB AVC version as your source, the resulting quality of the HEVC video will be much worse.

+1 everything that Otto says.

But I’ll give a straight answer (for what it’s worth): I have found the difference in file size to be about 30% … So, 2.8gb.

All I’ll add is that if you’re watching them in 1080p on a screen bigger than about 40-45", I don’t think those file sizes are anywhere near big enough.

If you think they’re fine then to each their own…

Ok so converting from a 12GB mkv movie to a 3 GB HEVC mp4 is not recommended .

So I should stick to mkv to mp4 (h.264).
Which is also reconverting/adding to the compression.

Can I assume from your comments that ANY conversion from mkv to Mp4 - h.264 or h.265 will not be good!
Or is it just the Extra compressing h.265 does that will show a noticeable deterioration of quality?

I have a BIG 4K TV and I really cannot see any difference in most conversions.
2gb Vs 4gb , even a 12gb down to 3gb !!

I have shiploads of space so that is not the reason…
BIG files have more streaming issues and I just cannot see the “value” of files bigger that say 5gb!
Size vs quality
Perception vs reality !

The only thing that matters is what looks good to you. You can experiment with different flavors and see what gives YOU the best quality for size.
