XBMC has been ported to the Boxee Box

Time to dust off all of the Boxee Boxes out there that have been sitting in the basement. :)

It appears that a couple of developers have been able to port XBMC to the boxee box.

It is still very early in development and is still VERY buggy, but it is an excellent start and hopefully development will progress quickly.

A hacked, named quarnster, is working a xbmc version for the Boxee Box. At this moment only the GUI is working by EGL/GLESv2 rendering, but hardware accelerated video and audio is a work in progress. The only requirement for now is root access. XBMC will be installed side by side next to the Boxee binaries, so limited risk is involved at this stage.

This project sounds very promising and could be a real alternative since Boxee won’t bring out any more updates for the Boxee Box. The project is open source and hopsted on github. Installation instructions can be found here: http://github.com/quarnster/boxeebox-xbmc

seams to be a long time ago. Any news on this. I do own a boxeebox and have installed xbmc and it runs just very smooth.

That would be me. I put up the github for plexee last fall but then got busy with work. https://github.com/grantmcwilliams/plexforboxee
I welcome any and all contributions to the project and thank robot2xl/xmcnuggetx for the work he did. I'm actively developing it now and even have a public repository that you can install from.

Installation

  • Navigate to Apps -> Repositories on your Boxee
  • Click the + button on the top right to add the PlexforBoxee repository - http://grantmcwilliams.com/plexforboxee
  • Browse the PlexforBoxee repository and add the Plexee App
  • Manual configure Plexee using the Plexee app
  • Enter the IP address of your Plex Media Server
  • Enter the port number of your Plex Media Server (default is 32400)
It only streams and has no transcoding, auto discovery of the PMS isn't yet supported and it doesn't show photos or stream audio yet. We're working on all of that.

I've used my BoxeeBox with Boxee+Hacks and XBMC for quite a while now, and have also tested the Plexee app.

But I must say that the best Plex client functionality on the BoxeeBox is achieved by using XBMC with the PlexBMC addon, the Plex-oriented Amber skin, and the PlexBMC Helper service addon.

Together these provide functionality very similar to that of recent official clients such as PHT.

Any updates to this?  I added the app through the repository and it did download.  When I launch the app it just shows auto scanning for plex servers and then it goes away.  I would love to breathe new life into my boxee box!  It was my favorite media player and I am really disappointed that they left all of us who invested in them, hanging in the wind.

Cheers for taking this on.

The plexee app has worked for me, but it is in an early stage and apparently abandonware (not sure), and it's not surprising if it's having problems with recent PMS versions and their new ways of doing things. You would probably have better luck with the PlexBMC solution, which works fine for me on my own Boxee Box, though I believe the results may vary depending on which XBMC version you install for it. (I'd avoid the latest gotham/helix versions, as they cause new problems for the PlexBMC helper script)

You will need to hack your BBox in order to install any XBMC version, and you can find extensive information on how to do that on the site "Boxeed In", which you can reach through this link.

Once you have installed the basic Boxee+Hacks features they will also allow you the ability to run external programs, such as XBMC, by following the additional guides for doing so.

Note that there are guides both for installing XBMC to the internal flash memory and for installing it on an external USB drive.
I recommend doing the latter, to avoid the risk of corrupting internal flash.

I also recommend using a good USB3 drive, even though the BBox only has USB2 ports, because normal USB2 drives never even get close to the maximum speed of a USB2 port, so a good USB3 drive will allow higher throughput.
