This is not an “ask for an invite” thread. There are plenty of those on xbox forums. Search for yourself. Imnnot wasting my time inviting everyone and their mother. Maybe some other nicer user will oblige you.
So first problem. I can’t play an mkv I received the latest update last night. I haven’t investigated it. But this same file I was able to “cast” it to my xbox previously using allcast from my plex server. I deleted the profile I had for the xbox one and restarted my server and came with the same error. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to test extensively.
If its anything like the direct media play from a hdd then it’s crap imo. I did not like the cheap looking layout with the crappy square thumbs on everything. All poster art is cut off and i see no title info on anything. At least the xbox 360 dlna had full poster art.
But it’s M$ …so i was not surprised.
It's that same app so of course layout is the same. Can anyone that's in the preview posts their experiences with DLNA ?
For those having problems with mkv files, its important to remember that mkv isn’t a specific codec or one type of video. Its a package that can contain multiple video, audio, and subtitle streams encoded in a whole mix of formats.
Think of it as being like a zip file… All zip files end in .zip, and you can open all zip files with pretty much any zip program - but what is in there could be anything…
The xbox one media player preview can open the mkv package, but only knows what to do with certain types of video and audio.
If your file is x264 video, aac audio, and no subtitles - you’re golden… If the video is the new x265 format (unlikely), the audio os DTS (probably from bluray) or FLAC (mainly anime), you’re put of luck. Also, it currently ignores all subtitles (including separate file and those packaged into the mkv), and only accepts the first audio and video stream in the file.
This means if you have an mkv file that is dual audio (again - mainly anime), it will only detect whatever was encoded as the ‘first’ one (be it Japanese or English - will vary depending on the file).
Things like DTS and subtitle support have been requested many times and are apparently coming, however FLAC and multi stream audio and video detection are less likely (at least in the short term).
Please note that some users have said that they experience beat results using direct play options, rather than trying to use an xbox one profile for transcoding.
Initial builds of the media player were unstable as hell, but recent updates are almost what Id call stable-ish with decent-for-vista levels of support and functionality… But its getting there (just don’t try navigating exclusively by voice… Its just painful).

The good news is that, everytime a file fails to play, MS knows about it. One of the devs mentioned this on reddit.
Well I restored my plex xbox one profile. And now it played everything I through at it. I have to say functionality wise it works really well for me now. No seek options or fast forward/rewind. I can confirm that it doesn’t…
Is it limited by hardware, so not even plex (if it gets out on XB1) will be able to output 24p?
ipren, It is not a Hardware Limitation. The Xbox One is perfectly capable of displaying 24p content, as you can see by popping in a Bluray should you have the 24p setting enabled in your Settings menu.
The Xbox One is getting a huge cache of updates for October. There are a couple of pretty significant updates to the Xbox One that might make it look a heck of a lot more appealing to gamers who want to get more out of multi-tasking, messaging and media control support.
