Xbox one not direct streaming

I have my movies straight to Mkv using makemkv. No conversion. When I hook up an external HDD to the Xbox one they play fine as is. All original. When I use Plex,it transcodes the movies. Why? I am hard wired. Why would Plex have to transcode if they play natively on a HDD? I do have direct play checked.

Sorry. I meant Direct Play, not streaming.

Same here. It used to work before… not sure if something changed on the Xbox itself or the Plex Server :-S

Could you post PMS logs from the time the console is transcoding ?

There must be something in the log file why a transcode is initiated.

This has recently started happening to me too, very strange

Yep. It’s broken. The Media Server is trying to transcode both the video and audio when the audio track is dts. If you have an ac3 track in the same container, switch to it and it will direct stream. I think they must have bugged the Xbox One profile. It’s transcoding DTS to aac. It should be transcoding to ac3. I guess I might have to use Popcorn Audio Converter if I want to want an mkv with a dts track.

Anyone know where to get older versions of Plex?

I have not been able to reproduce this with my Blurays in h264/dts. As mike4001 above mentioned logs during a playback attempt of one of these files would help figure out what is triggering the transcode of video when only an audio transcode should be requested.

I’ll have to double check but there was a server change awhile back that causes the server to prefer aac over ac3 for transcodes. The notes say it was for stereo but I do not remember if it carried over into multi channel as well. If it is on the server side I am not quite sure a profile change would do anything to fix it though and it would need to be reported for the server guys to look at. Again, the server logs when playing one of these items would be helpful for them to try and figure out what is causing your issue.

As far as I know there isn’t any way to downgrade the Plex for the Xbox One.

I’ll try to get some server logs at some point over the next few days.

I went back to Serviio (DLNA) and the files that I was trying to play with Plex work fine using the Xbox One Media Player.

I rolled back the Plex Media Server and it works now at 0.9.12.19.1537-f38ac80. No more upgrades for me.

I see elsewhere than people with the same or similar issues have done a completely fresh install of Plex and that has fixed the issue.

What do you mean by a completely fresh install? The app?

This issue continues to plague me

I mean deleting everything and rebuilding the database from scratch.

I suspect it might have something to do with there not being enough space for the transcode but I couldn’t be bothered checking now. You have to have the same amount of space as the file you are transcoding and 100mb.
