Xbox Series X Can't Direct Play 4K HEVC Content

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7998
Player Version#: 5.77.1

I think this issue just started recently, but I’m not positive.

The Xbox app will not successfully Direct Play 4K HEVC content. I either get a spinning circle or a green image. If I disable Direct Play (and Direct Stream) and let my server transcode the content, it plays fine, but 1) the XSX should support HEVC as far as I can tell, and 2) even if it doesn’t, shouldn’t the Plex app be smart enough to fallback to transcoding without me having to tell it to do that manually?

I asked a coworker with an XBox to test and they could not reproduce. Is it possible for you to add a sample file to google drive, drop box or similar so we can test with it. The xbox player logs after it happens would help as well.

Hi,

How can I get you the download link? Or should I just paste it here? With the full file, it spins indefinitely when I try to play it. With the sample file trimmed down to 2 minutes, it spins for a little bit and then plays, but I only get audio, no video. It plays fine with Plex’s Web Player and it plays fine if I disable Direct Play and Direct Stream.

Sent. Thank you.

In addition to the videos that spin endlessly or output green video or no video, I just encountered a 4K HEVC video that does automatically transcode, but it’s converting it to 1080p, which I absolutely don’t want.

All of these videos play successfully on the PS5 app. Even if I tell this most recent video to unnecessarily transcode, it does it to 4K like it should be doing. So the Xbox app is all sorts of broken for me.

Any news?

One of tour QA guys was able to reproduce issue with your file. I don’t have an ETA for a fix however. Need to figure out what is different about your file compared to other HEVC content we have that plays fine.

Ok great. Let me know if you want any other example files.

FYI my Xbox app updated to 5.78.2, and my server updated to 1.40.1.8227, and the issue is partially fixed. Videos that gave an endless spinning circle, like the full version of the 2 minute clip I sent you, still do that unless I manually tell the app to transcode them, but videos that were outputting a green image or no image now play perfectly fine without having to do anything at all.

The Xbox client has been having trouble playing everything in the last few weeks, some update borked it recently. Direct Play is completely broken for all files and Direct Stream breaks after a time with locking, stuttering, glitching etc.

This is all with 264 & 265 sources. Doesn’t matter. Before the last update or two everything was silky smooth.

Someone broke something real bad. Check your Xbox client change logs.

I noticed the same thing. I have uninstalled server and client side on the Xbox Series X, reset everything, etc and I still get stuttering and then audio falls out of sync on my xbox direct playing 4k content. Watching the log, it sometimes changes status to “buffering” randomly, and it also notes in red that it can’t find the Xbox profile.

I just for the heck of it, changed the Xbox One profile to “Xbox” so I stopped getting profile errors and it seems to work now for the direct streaming 4k rips. From what I can tell, both Xbox display overlay and my receiver, it’s 4k and Atmos.

How do you change the profile?

:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Profiles

There are HTML pages for all kinds of profiles. I just hijacked the Xbox One version and titled it Xbox since my log was showing it could not find a profile error. I dont know if it negatively effects anything image/audio wise, but my projector/receiver/xbox all say its 4k, direct play, and Atmos and HDR are on while watching a ripped 4k disc.

Spoke too soon. It’s back to its stutter/freezing etc.

Yeah doesn’t work for me either unfortunately. Trying to direct play a 4K HEVC file just buffers endlessly. I’ve also since found that telling it to transcode doesn’t work great, either, because it breaks subtitles and causes audio crackling.
