Hi
This is just a heads up for all.
I recently have been tearing my hair out with new hardware that does not meet basic functionality and expected performance. LOL
I just very recently upgraded my PMS to run on a new box. In doing so I wanted to re-install and get working my FTP server, RDP access, and Apache server on the new box.
Now… The caveat is, a few months ago I replaced my Time Warner Supplied Technicolor modem/router with a new NetGear C6300 Cable modem / Router since the Time Warner device was a pile of junk. (The reasons to lengthy to describe here)
When trying to re-configure that box for FTP, RDP, and HTTP, I find that this router has major issues with Port Forwarding. Basically it does not work!!! (Good news is that Port Forward for PMS 32400 does work).
Here are the issues.
FTP Port Forward 21: When trying to configure that one the router says port 21 is in conflict with another setting when it actually is not.
HTTP Port Forward 80: This one you can configure but when trying that port the router goes to it’s admin application not the apache server running on the target device. (Even with Remote Management turned off!!)
RDP Port Forward 3389: This one allows you to configure it but plainly does not work at all.
*Accessing all these from within my internal network work fine. Just the port forward issue does not allow access from the public network.
Now just to prevent any suggestion that it is my ISP (Time Warner), that is not the case because my previous Linksys router did all this just fine. Additionally, http://canyouseeme.org shows my ports are visible to the outside world.
Bottom line - This modem / router is not ready for prime time!!!
**An Aside (My soapbox) LOL:
It seems to me that, these days, the new crop of software engineers do not pay attention to details and do not strive for excellence, The prevailing attitude seems to be “Well, we’re not saving lives”. My problem is that my background in Electronic Warfare (Stealth, during the Vietnam War in the Air Force), we WERE saving lives with our hardware and software. So… this could only be my problem.
When I was managing software developers,(lol many… many… years ago in my counsutling biz and later for the Banking Industry) I used to preach, “If you can imagine an issue… It Will Happen!!!.” I used to call it “Defensive Coding”.
These days, it seems to me developers do not work that way any more or use much imagination. For me Software development has been more of an art than science
I can site 3 different major issues I have come across in the last few years that illustrate this point but do not have the time or patience to expand on those now. (LOL or remember details about the issues… My memory is not what it used to be)
Cheers
John
