[Popular] Collection overhaul ideas

I'd like to propose an overhaul for a feature that is very underutilized, collection feature. Instead of using collection as a mere filtering tool, I think it would be cool to see a tree-structured collection. This allows users to pool media that are related to each other. I said media not films or TV shows because it isn't section-wide but library-wide, allowing users to put movies, TV series, music or even pictures. Take a look at the mock-up I've put together and notice there is mixture of films and TV series with Marvel Cinematic Universe with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Collection Creation Settings mock-up

Above is settings mock when user creates the collection. The existing metadata editing capability still applies to the collection so user can choose/upload poster, background image and everything else. As for displaying the collection in the library, feature would allow users to choose two display options. "Collection Only" would be the tree-structure view where any media within the collection will not show outside of that collection. This will be fitting for movies such as Lord of the Rings trilogy or Harry Potter series. "Collection + Individual" would show media both within the collection and outside of collection. Marvel Cinematic Universe would be fitting example since technically not all movies are not directly linked together. They only share the universe but not necessarily sequels to the previous film. Additionally, say if you are on pre-play page for Fellowship of the Ring, it would list the collection it belongs to as well as other media that also belong to that collection. Something like the mock-up below.

Of course, collection's metadata can be edited just like any movie or TV show. Additionally, edit includes play order that will over-ride collection order if user wants to have collection list in certain way but play in a rather different order.

Not only will this overhaul be useful for movies with sequels but you can add printed bonus material that come with blu-ray/DVD or booklet that come with music album or add music videos from that album, allowing you to have all-in-one comprehensive experience. Also it would allow better and comprehensively organized anime library for anime lovers (anime franchises tend to expand its franchise through different forms of media (TV series, movie spin offs/sequels, radio shows, comic books, etc) which Plex cannot accommodate at current state.) I know that this sounds a bit like hybrid library idea (and that implementing hybrid library pose some technical challenges) but this collection idea would merely shows all the media in one place but points to the already existing media entries within the PMS when accessed, making it more of a alias or symlink of sort if you will. What do you guys think?

Nice mock ups.   :D

It would be nice to implement that, and have an option to switch from default to that so we have the choice.

Kind Regards,

Jerome Haynes

Very cool, thanks for the mocks!

Great mock ups. I know there have been similar requests, but it's nice to actually have an image to clearly call it out.

For reference, I believe this is the most popular thread on the topic: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/81160-movie-collections/

Like that you thought it out and included related TV shows and also have the preplay screen point to the collection view as well. And, it's good that you properly noted the settings aspect of it, as people will have difference preferences for how to display them.

just realized you called out bonus material already (and my mind was stuck on "extras")  perhaps in the future this kind of view might allow for extras to be assigned to a whole collection when appropriate (not all that common, but sometimes they put extras pertaining to an entire trilogy in box sets, etc.)...

(and, not to get ahead of ourselves, but hopefully the same flair could be applied to multiple cuts of movies)

Ooooh! I was just exploring collections for the first time the other day hoping they would behave this way. I was trying to build a Marvel Cinematic Universe collection much like you mocked, and got frustrated when all it really did was add a filtering option. I then tried to make a playlist for all the Marvel content, but the UI is unfriendly to the amount of things I was trying to add (think 2 season of TV, along with the movies). I would add to your original suggestion the ability to make a customized playlist and attach it to a collection. That way you can say "I want to watch this collection" and it'll play in your specified order. Perfect use case, Marvel. Agents of Shield takes place in and around a few of the movies, and a playlist is a good way to make sure you have all of your stories in chronological order. So not only is it a collection, but you're also able to specify how you watch your collection.

I'm voting for this one for sure.

Glad you guys like the idea!

I did come across that thread once and debated if I wanted to simply reply to the thread or create a new one but eventually decided to create a new one. Reason being this idea is more about having a global collection than just one media type. I guess you can say this is an idea that mixes hybrid library idea and tree structure collection idea. And yes, collection should definitely include alternate versions of films.

I think ordering of the media would be enough for the most part. But yes, I agree that custom play order would be beneficial in some instances. After all, the purpose of this collection idea is so that you have all-in-one place, comprehensive experience of the work no matter what forms of media they are in.

Good point! I'm sure they are, but hopefully the Plex team is counting all the likes for the similar threads as one, and factoring all the ideas (which you nicely summed up here anyway) into a final solution.

I just did something like this manually for all my TV Shows based on network(FOX,CBS,ABC,NETFLIX,ETC). Would be nice if this was implemented! Sweet Mockup!

Elan has liked and following the thread, so I hope he takes note of that and takes into the consideration ;)

Thanks, glad you like it.

■■■■ ya!  Great mocks, great idea!  I would LOVE this! +1.  Thanks.

Thats just brilliant... +1

I would love to see something like this!  After we get server security and server side tools, count on my vote.  I've chosen to be selective with my "Likes" until we get the tools we need to really do the job of administering the server.

After these things are done, I'll be back here!  :)

+1

Yes! And a super +1 to custom play order, (thanks Marvel)

Great idea and the mock ups look amazing!

Bump

+1 for me.

I like the mock-ups.

I too would like to have the collections overhauled where movies, TV shows can be grouped into one collection.

I would group the Marvel movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Agents of SHIELD & Agent Carter TV series into the same collection instead of having them in separate  Movies & TV Shows collections.

I was going to post a suggestion to allow merging of Library's, but I suppose this could fit nicely in with this. A collection could be a merged set of Library's, although I think i'd still like both... what's everyone else think?

Love the mockups, very well thought out. Hopefully this will get some traction, something I've been missing from XBMC since I started with Plex!
