I've been trying to get my old music cleaned up and aligned, but after cleaning up the tags a refresh doesn't seem to do anything. Doing a forced update (slow) was equally fruitless. Do I need to simply delete my library and start again?
Adding "Album Artists" to DJ mixes, Tribute albums, Compilations, etc is crucial for getting it to not look like crap.
Note: I'm not editing the tags from within the web app, but a 3rd party app

EDIT: i have "Use embedded tags" checked in my library. I assume that's how i give preference to my own tags?
EDIT2: I added the same albums to a new Music library, and they appear correctly.
Feature Request: ID3 tags should be reread on a refresh when the the Modified Date for a file has changed.

+1 That would be awesome! My library is daily synced with the MusicBrainz Database but Plex does not recognize new tags. I will continue to use SubSonic until Plex supports this.
This is actually a pretty well-known bug that has been around for quite a long time. Apparently they’ve been unable to fix it without causing problems elsewhere, so we continue to hope.
There is a workaround, commonly referred to as the “Plex Dance,” which essentially means removing your music from the library, then adding it back in. If you’re doing the whole library, it’s essentially the same as creating a new library.
The ‘Use embedded tags’ setting is one part of making sure Plex reads them first, but you also need to put the media Agents in the right order. Here’s a guide: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/227541/howto-configure-plex-to-use-embedded-metadata-music
