How do I update Plex on my WD MyCloud?

Plex PMS is saying it has an update on my WD MyCloud NAS. I don't see any provision in the UI for updating an existing running app on the NAS.

I hope I don't have to uninstall/reinstall... Anyone have a better idea? Do I need to 'Putty in' or something?![post-165464-0-46503400-1434386574.png|690x62](upload://tWZ3gX5oCZLK2xOoOnLtBZUx5MN.png)

*crickets*...

What WD My Cloud do you have?

figured it out. I just stopped the app and uploaded the update via the UI as if it were a new app.

was able to add as new and have it overwrite existing. Internally it says it is running. Externally, “We’re sorry, but we can’t reach this server.” on server page.

Tried to config from WD, and I get 404, page not found message. Tried turning off and then on, no change.

Is there another step?

I stopped the app first.

I uninstalled the existing Plex app, and then installed the updated one and update was installed :)

Uninstall doesn't delete any Metadata no Library info just executable files.

But stopping the app and then installing makes sense also, I would try that first :)

I'm stuck in the same area.  I have a WD My Cloud EX4.  I figured out how to stop the app, but am unable to install the update.  I downloaded the app and it is a .bin extension.  I cut/pasted it into the MyCloud but can't run it.  What am I missing here?  I have uninstalled and tried to install a clean download.  I continue to get the warning that an update is available for me to install manually.

+1 on this. I download the correct .bin for WD ex4100, I open it with expander and it becomes: WDMyCloudEX4100_plexmediaserver_09124.1192-9a47d21.bin.cpgz  I try to "Install an app manually," it thinks for a bit then, "Error: Failed to install app"

I did similar, but didn't "expand" the download.  I uninstalled the app and then loaded the downloaded app via "install app manually".  I directed the program to the newly downloaded "update" and it did install the update.  When I opened the PLEX Media Server it continues to show that I need to manually install an update.

Hi All,

I tried all these methods with no success. I have removed it from my Nas and hoping that it will update with the new updated version, if not this is a major flaw…

Cheers

OK, so on OS X it downloads as a .bin, and expands to .cpgz. There was an plexmediaserver_09124.1192-9a47d21 in June, and now an 09128.1362-4601e39 in July. I turned the app off in the NAS (WD ex4100) and attempted a manual update - still comes back with “Error: Failed to install app”

OK. This may be a bug - when you log in to Plex and it says to update manually, you click the link and it downloads the .bin for the EX2, not the ex4100 - I went to Plex downloads and got the correct one for the ex4100 - and it went through the install correctly. Victory.

when you install as a new app to do the update did you pick the manual install option or the plea checkbox option

did you install update manually by following the install app manually link or did you check the plea media server box and install that way?

Manually.

Thank you,
Beau D’Amore

A new version of Plex Server is out. I clicked on update in the webUI and by default it downloaded the software for Western Digital EX2 - whereas I have an ex4100 - you won’t fool me again, no, I went to https://plex.tv/downloads and got the correct version for my NAS. Others having trouble installing take note go to Plex downloads and get the version you need.

You helped me update my plex (server) - Cheers bro. I will however explain a bit more in detail for less IT experienced people. Log into your WD my cloud dahsboard, then go to apps, and select “Plex Media Server” and where it says “Run App” simply click on the switch to turn it off. Once turned off, click on the “+” or “add an app” and find this “To install an app manually, click here.” on the page. Click “here” and then locate the .bin file you have manually downloaded and enter. It will then update your plex server

I tried all of the tips on this forum and I still was unable to get remote access to my Plex server. Here is what I had to do to get remote access again:

1.) I downloaded the latest version for my NAS from plex.tv/downloads.
2.) Next I turned off and uninstalled the Plex app from the app menu on my WD EX2 Dashboard
3.) I then updated my WD EX2 NAS server’s firmware to the latest version. I was running version 1.05.36 and I upgraded to version 2.10.302 (make sure you have halted all network traffic to your NAS because this will initiate a reboot when it is finished)
4.) Next I remoted into my wireless router and made sure that UPnP was enabled and that the correct port for my Plex server was open.
5.) I then noticed that the time zone for my router was not set correctly so I adjusted for the right time zone I am in. (not sure if this helped but with how sensitive everything is with the correct time I didn’t think it would hurt)
6.) Finally I reinstalled the Plex server app on my NAS from the latest version of Plex for WD EX2 that I downloaded earlier.

Hope this helps!

You don’t have to uninstall the existing app.
Turn off the Plex app from the app menu of WD mycloud mirrror dashboard.
again from the app menu of WD mycloud mirrror dashboard, click add app:
Then choose the new .bin file and do manual update. it will install the update
