Please let us edit the tags from the new Auto Tag Feature

I have just added a couple of thousand photos into Plex to see how this works, while I’m a little underwhelmed by the lack of Album control inside the server, I understand that it is following the same design principals as the current movies and tv shows sections. ie you have to manually edit the sub folders to create albums or change the album on the mobile device for each upload to give you a new album.

However, what i have a real issue with is the photos being tagged completely wrong and having no way to edit them. For example, pictures of Kangaroo’s (yes I’m from Australia) being tagged as dogs, Koala’s being tagged as both sloth’s and Three Toed Sloth’s, Sheep being tagged just about every other 4 legged animal other than a sheep, my 3yr old Daughter holding a newborn being tagged as an adult male, Three women on a night out get tagged as “2” “male” and “love” when they are sitting at a table having a wine.

This is just some of things I’ve come across in the first couple of hundred pictures. I appreciate that this gives us a good starting point for tagging the pictures, but without the ability to fix some blatant errors the tagging is completely useless.

Also we need some sort of just “Picture Tag” search, if I search for something like “beach” and get hundreds of results, I would like to be able to just see pictures of the beach, not movies and TV shows and actors that have the name Beach. And then start a slideshow of my beach pictures.

Sorry for the rant and wall of text

TL:DR

To conclude, please open up the picture tags to be editable as the errors make it unusable in its current state and implement some sort of picture tag search that allows for slide show so that the tagging system is useful.

Regards
Maglor

I’ve only had a little time to check out the new tagging feature, but so far my experience is the same. I have a photo of a squirrel that was tagged as a fox, an unidentified bird tagged as a heron (definitely not a heron), and a heron tagged as “aquatic bird.”

I photographed a particular flower. I took several images of identical composition, bracketing exposures. Plex labeled one image as “vegetable,” another as “zucchini,” another as both “edible fruit” and “avocado,” and another was not tagged at all. The flower was the blossom of a skunk cabbage.

Here’s one I really like:

When I search for “waterfalls,” the full search page finds 30 waterfalls. If I view any waterfall image, the “Related Photos” list indicates that there are 16 images tagged as “waterfalls.” In reality, there are several hundred waterfall images in my Photo libraries, so neither the “Related Photos” list nor the full Search page are even close to correct.

So far, the photo autotagging feature is even more disappointing than Gracenote’s accuracy in identifying classical music. The fact that I can’t edit the tags assigned to my photos makes this new feature actually worse than useless.

I am trying to go all in with PLEX. Bough PLEX Pass, setup HD Homerun for DVR capability, loaded all my music, etc. In order to really go all in I really need manual photo tagging capability. I appreciate the attempt to do auto tagging but it is just not going to be reliable especially with high volumes of photos.

PLEX, please open up manual photo tagging and album creation. The basic albums are nice for date or activity based categorization but manual photo tagging and robust filtering adds significant capability. Saving custom filters for tags would be great as well if that is not currently available.

Please allow manual tagging for videos as well. Thanks!

Manual tagging please - and the ability to share albums between users - managed users, at least.

Manual tagging please.

+1 for manual tagging

+1 for manual tagging

My photos are all manually tagged with other photo library software (primarily Windows Photo Gallery). I care much more about my personal tagging of photos than Plex’s auto-tagging. I would be ecstatic if Plex would simply read the EXIF tags embedded within my pictures, to include all the face tagging. Being able to edit/add to those from within Plex would be icing on the cake!

Auto-tagging is wonderful, but it needs the ability to add/remove tags manually for it to be of any real use. I’d like to be able to add tags for family events, or vacations or a myriad of other things the auto-tag thing will never figure out.

We’re actively working on more tagging features. Please give us some time, we’ll hopefully have some news to share soon.

Manual tagging is here, as of Plex Web 3.37.1.

Thanks, Plex!

I take it this feature just adds tags to the Plex database and doesn’t yet address EXIF tags embedded in the picture files themselves…?

I’m too trying to go Plex all in with photos. The client/server model entices me, but the tagging and albums I know is quite limited at the moment. I’ve been looking for something like google photos but offline, and the closest I found was this:
daminion software (daminion.net). That has most of what I want but no longer sell a consumer version. If Plex gets close to that, I’ll be very happy!!

I was messing around with manual tagging and while I understand the feature to manually tag is available on the Plex database side. I don’t want to go through 40,000 pictures to manually tag all these pictures for them to just reside in the plex database. It would be appreciated if Plex provided the ability to use the tags that are already in place on the photos. This way if the end user has to update their computer and reinstall plex, all the tags in the Metadata will automatically be imported into plex.

As an engineer I know this may require a little restructuring for the plex database, server changes, etc. But it should not be a difficult task.

Thank you for your consideration.

There is a separate feature request for adding support for embedded tags. Please add your vote.
