Manual tagging of photos

Hi,

I’ve been reading about the exciting new automatic tagging options for photos, but I just wanted to check if it is also possible to add my own manual tags?

For example, I wish to tag all of my holidays in Tenby with a ‘Tenby’ flag, or all of my holidays in Italy, with an ‘Italy’ flag. Or i may wish to add a persons name/relation as a tag.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Unfortunately, the Photo support in Plex is miles behind the other library types, and no manual tagging is possible currently. I was excited about the new auto-tagging too, until I discovered how horrendously inaccurate it is.

Oh that’s a shame. I was really hoping this would be a great thing and make browsing our photos a breeze.

I wont get my hopes up then on the auto tagging…

Devs… is manual tagging in the pipeline? Thanks

Yeah would be great

+1 for manual tagging, and a much better way to see tags too - perhaps as a pseudo folder hierarchy with drag and drop to allow single or multiple photos to be tagged quickly

I still don’t see tagging on my plex server, now 6 months after is was released. current version, i have plex pass, but no tagging.

edit: (I don’t see how to delete post), I do have it on my phone, and it does a lousy job, so wont use it anyway.

Yeah…I’m also still waiting on the possibilty to use tags already stored in my photos to search for them on plex-server.
All of my photos are tagged with informations to persons, animals, nature, location, …searching should be possible by using and COMBINING the tags. example search-term : “Autria; Snow; Tree” and therefore all Photos with these tags should be shown…Please developers give the feature to us…THX

Wow, how is something as basic as tagging pictures still not a thing in 2018?

Another +1 for manual tagging. You guys need to focus some attention to the photos area and make some more improvements, think they are needed.

I would get Plex Pass if manual tagging is there. How hard is it? I am happy to work on the feature if you hire me. LoL. Just kidding. But seriously, implement manual tagging.

I would also get a Plex Pass if manual tagging was introduced. I have my whole photo collection (25,000+) tagged with useful informative tags but all of my taggings is useless if I use Plex. The photo search function in Plex is awful as it stands at the moment. Surely the Plex Dev team must realise the potential for getting many more Plex Pass subscribers if they just provided this simple facility. It seems like they just cannot be bothered.

That is exactly my position…

The ability to manually tag photos was added in February.

Don’t know why there was no announcement beyond the release notes. Such a popular feature request is deserving of a little fanfare, even with Plex’s penchant for overusing the word “awesome.”

That’s great news!
Do you know, the release notes don’t make it clear if the manual tags one adds to a photo in Plex are written to the actual meta-data of the file itself, or importantly, if existing meta-data in photo files will be imported and searchable. If new tags would be saved in the meta-data of the file when added?
Or are the tags only found in the Plex database?

As a Shotwell user, I find it immensely reassuring to know that I am somewhat ‘future proofed’ by keeping my actual files up-to-date. If the meta-data is only in the Plex database, that would really lock me in. Which, if I use Plex for ever and ever in the future… may seem like a non-issue. However, companies go bust… software becomes discontinued … not maintained…
I need my photo files meta-data to be up-to-date in case I decide, at a later date, to migrate them to another system.

From its beginning, Plex has had a policy of not modifying your media files directly in any way, with the exception of deleting them in certain circumstances (which you have to enable). So I’m certain they are not writing tags back to your files. I, for one, would prefer it stay this way.

I’d like it if Plex would read and import embedded tags from photos as well. That’s a different request, and you should add your vote, if you haven’t already, to this thread.

hmm… .I’ll certainly vote for your thread (actually, I’ve done so already).
As for modifying files… hmmm … OK, I can see the advantage of being sure that ones files are not touched. In one way it does offer you control over what you have in the library (i.e., it is exactly what you put in there). But, I think user choice in some aspects like this (i.e., configurability) could bridge the gap between those who want to see their files updated in this way, … and those who prefer they remain untouched.

Honestly, i’ve not actually started playing around with the photo library functionality from Plex (not having yet found the time between working and handling my little one-year-old at home)

Can you tell me, perhaps Plex makes it possible to edit photo files in an external editor somehow?

i.e., I can imagine the use case where people upload automatically a whole bunch of recently taken photos which, for example, require a little optimization, which they, for example, prefer to do in their photo editing software of choice (Photoshop, GIMP, etc).

How would Plex make it possible to temporary export said photos for the purpose of editing, and then overwrite the version in the library? If this is possible (particularly for batch file processing) then modifying tags in an external editor is also a completely acceptable work-around for me.

Plex has no such function, no way to launch an image in an external application.

Is there any way to add a tag to multiple photos at once?
If there is, I’m sorry but I can’t find it.

This is written using music as an example, but the procedure is the same for photos:

Many thanks indeed.
I knew the multiple selection, but I was missing (not seeing) the “edit” in the Horizontal tool bar.
DOH!!
Thanks again.
