Auto Tagging of Photos

I’m either very disappointed in the management of photos or very uninformed. If other users who are happy with how photos are managed could enlighten me, I’d appreciate it.

First of all, I don’t appreciate that photos are “temporarily uploaded to a trusted third-party service provider”. Can’t tagging be done locally? That’s like the whole point of Plex. If I wanted my stuff uploaded to a third party, I’d just use Google Photos. Auto tagging locally would have the added benefit of alleviating users of the 1,000 photos per month limit. Assuming I don’t take any more photos, it’ll take Plex over two years to auto tag my library. This obviously isn’t practical.

Secondly, why is there no facial recognition? Shouldn’t Plex be able to group similar faces together and let me label them?

Is anyone happy with the photo management of Plex? I’m genuinely interested in the use-case of someone that this actually works for.

So far I am very underwhelmed. Auto tagging has not worked and Plex does not seem to recognize the manual tags I added in File Explorer and Adobe Bridge.

Here are my expectations. In short, I would be surprised if plex inc prioritizes photo autotagging any time soon.

I agree that plex is bad at photo library organization. I have been trying to make it useful for me by:

  1. Setting up NextCloud server where my phone auto-uploads certain albums at night

  2. Sharing the drive the NextCloud stores the photos and creating a Photo library in Plex with said shared drive

  3. Enable Auto-tagging on Plex so the photos are easily searchable.

So my way of making the Plex photo library useful is by NOT using it as an uploader of any kind and focusing on the auto-tagging feature only. Unfortunately, the Auto-tagging is not working for me (not related to the 1000/month limit).
