Limitations When Running Plex Media Server on NVIDIA SHIELD " WHEN " ?

Storage Limitations

Writing to USB and Network Storage

When you mount a USB drive as “removable storage” or network share on NVIDIA SHIELD, that content is read-only. It is not currently possible to write content to those mounted locations, which can affect some Plex features.

Media Optimizer

When making use of our Media Optimizer feature to optimize content, you will need to choose a library location on your device’s “internal storage”. The optimizing process requires “write permission” to the specified location. Unfortunately, when you mount a USB drive as “removable storage” or connect to a network storage location, those are provided to us as read-only locations, as mentioned above.** ( means that if you have a NAS attached as storage you cant use the optimizer) ***

Manually Installing Channels or Plugins

When running on the NVIDIA SHIELD, the Plex Media Server data directory is not currently user-accessible. Unfortunately, this means that it is not currently possible to manually install channels or plugins on the device

Premium Music Libraries

Plex Media Server running on NVIDIA SHIELD does not currently have the libraries necessary to support premium music libraries. We’re working to bring in that support as soon as we can

** Cannot make backup **
Because files aren’t accessible

Most of these is all because of plex using a secure location instead of an accessible location for Plex data on the shield…
my question again is , any dev have any ETA on this ?

Thank you for posting this.

I have to laugh at your post, though. And don’t take offense. You are just confirming what I had suspected about the Shield running Plex Media Server completely.

You may want to also raise the issue on NVidia’s forums as well. Most of the issues you raise are problems with the OS and not in Plex’s hands.

This has been raised so many times (here and nvidia forums) since the BIG announcement and release of 3.2 .
This announcement telling us about the Shield now being this wonderful server for Plex.

So almost 5 months later it still doesn’t work.

All Plex seems to want to do lately is get an announcement out to drive interest. I have a Shield Pro and I have tried many times to get the server working on it but every time I try it simply fails to work even remotely correctly.

The Shield may handle small libraries OK but it sure does not handle my moderately large one at all.

There is a lot of finger pointing back and forth but I blame Plex. They just wanted to get the announcement out to drive interest and get more money and then the effort by Plex slowed and the incremental improvements have not addressed any of the major issues at all.

All Plex wants is to get more money they do not care about users. Fortunately I have a working Plex server running on a pretty powerful computer ant I am pretty satisfied with it BUT I could save some money on power is the Shield would work but it seems to be little more than effective vaporware as far as actually supporting a reasonable library.

I bought the shield for other reasons BUT I wasted a good deal of time trying to get the shield to work correctly.

I like Plex a lot BUT I do not believe they are any longer really interested in the quality of their software but rather they simply want more money and will release software no matter how flawed in order to get more and more money.

It almost seems that their corporate mantra has become “Get as many Plex Pass users as possible and who cares if the software works or not.”

i’ve emailed nvidia in the past it as nothing to do with them and they explained clearly why it’s plex’s , i’ve forwarded a copy to one of the dev’s but you might as well talk to the ■■■■■■■ wall…
there is no rush to have these fixed but at least knowing they ■■■■■■■ acknowledge it and working on it…

I would be very interested in reading that reply from Nvidia. Wouldn’t be surprised if it were true that Plex are the only party responsible for this mess, since I don’t know of any other app waiting on OEM support to use external storage…

Plex stores it’s library in data/data, which is the secure location, instead of Android/data as does Kodi. If it were a issue with the Sheild then you could not backup or install add-ons in Kodi.

Also another issues is that apps can only write to there app folder, which has been covered multiple times in this forum. This is also not a Nvidia issue but how it works under the Android framework, but has nothing to do with Nvidia or the Shield.

I was specifically talking about manually backups, but I will expand. Scheduled backups should work, and by default the location is /storage/emulated/0/Plex Media Server/Database Backups/, it writes the logs here so there should be no reason the backups wouldn’t be able to write here either. Since the PMS owns this location there should be reason that it can’t write to it. This makes no sense though since it is on the internal storage and would be wiped by a reset.

PMS should also be able to backup to external, non-adopted storage, but you have to be specific were it can write. It has to be /storage/your-drive/Android/data/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb/, Plex also owns this location. If it can’t then it’s a issue on the side of Plex.

Backing up to the root of an external storage is not allowed without first being granted permission to do so. For Plex to do this it would need to use the same method as Total Commander, which currently is the only app that can get full write permissions to non-adopted storage. This was brought up to one of the lead guys for Plex, but was dismissed out of hand.

As for importing backups, that is total on Plex since it owns the permission to the secure location where the Plex data is stored.

Well, this well and truly sucks. Looks like this Lifetime PlexPass customer will be moving to Kodi. What a waste of money.

LOL another person who purchased something without researching first… quite common.
