Nvidia Shield Content

Ok so I have my Plex server set up on my Nvidia Shield. I can link to it remotely from my destop and my Smartphone. When I put a USB drive containing files, primarily photos, into the Nvidia shield I can access them via my desktop and phone without issue.

The problem is that I cannot add the content to the Nvidia Shield Plex app so all of my folders on the Nvidia shield show as empty. What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks

I haven’t tried to do this, but there is a Help page regarding this:

Maybe that will help you identify the problem.

Thank you for that link. I will take a look at it and see if it helps. Other than this final issue I think it’s all going well so far.

I’m confused as to what you’re trying to do.
Are you creating a new library with the new files, or trying to add to an existing one?

Hi, what I was trying unsuccessfully to do was to create new folders on the Plex desktop app and have that folder and its contents appear on my Plex server on the Shield. I tried to create a folder tonight and add some photos and it has appeared on my Plex server on the shield. Hopefully all is now good. Music and movies now to see how that goes.

I think you are mixing up terms that will make for confusion later on. You said in the first comment that you are plugging a usb drive into the shield, but in the last message you said you are creating folders on the plex desktop app. That doesn’t make any sense.
Where is the data coming from that you want the shield to find? From the first message it looks like there is a USB drive attached to the shield.
What do you mean by “creating a folder on the plex desktop app”? From the desktop app you can create a new library on the shield server, or add a folder to the library on the shield server(the folder itself is on the USB drive though). It’s not added to the desktop “app” though, it’s on the server.

Ok. So I am putting the data onto a usb drive, plugging the drive into my Nvidia Shield, logging in on my laptop and connecting to the Plex server. Creating and managing the folders on my laptop and then the folders are appearing on the Nvidia shield unit on Plex.

I do not seem to be able to do any management of the Plex server via the Nvidia shield and that’s where the confusion was. For example can I transfer data from a usb drive plugged into the Shield directly to the Plex server using only the Plex app on the shield or is all management done through logging into the plex server from another device such as a laptop.

Brand new to the hole Plex thing, only got the Nvidia shield on Saturday.

Yes, I believe all library management needs to be done from the desktop. You’re not actually creating anything on the laptop, you’re directly managing the server via the app.
Also note that you’re not “transferring data from a usb drive”. You’re just using that as a drive for the server.
If you want to add/delete data directly from the drive when it is still connected to the nvidia shield, that is also possible over the network.

That is a very helpful explanation, thank you. I’m getting my head around it now. What I have in my head now is that the Plex on the Shield is the server and when I log in from my laptop I’m simply working as the manager for the server. Moving files, creating folders etc all must be done remotely and the shield plus the USB drive is the plex server.

Any data that I add to the USB drive and locate in a folder on the plex then becomes accessible from any location that I give permission and log in details. Handy bit of kit.

Another note, that is probably going to bite you if you try to edit files over the network, is that android is very particular about writing/reading. In order to get around that, the shield has a particular directory that is created on the drive called NVIDIA_SHIELD. If you want to access data on the network, it must be within that subdirectory. That one took me a week to figure out.

Thank you again. I will have to look at that. I have only moved photos onto it at the moment. I haven’t tried movies or music yet but I will see how I get on.

That sounds like a great time saving tip and hopefully I wont have to waste a week working that out now ! Its taken me 5 days to get to this point !
