Live TV on Roku in the future?

I haven’t come across any info on whether DVR Scheduling and Live TV will someday be available on the Roku. I know it’s only currently available on Android and iOS devices, but I’m all Roku at home so I’m hoping. Anything official anyone’s heard of?

Yes, it will be on Roku as well.

Awesome. Can I be greedy, and ask for an ETA? I don’t need a very specific one.

Really? If you dont mind how will it be supported? As far as I have ever seen Silicon Dust has admittedly not supported the Roku ecosystem and don’t seem like they ever intend to. Will it work with the HDHR Extend since it outputs H.264?

As a roku owner I am really intrigued because I am on the verge of moving to android TV for the live tv features but having a house full of rokus already makes it a pricey proposition.

This makes my day!

Guys, take what you can get. The fact that a Plex employee confirmed something on the road-map is a miracle.

@rsava I didn’t say when, it could be in 2020.

@nagle3092 Yes, it’ll work with the HDHR Extend of course. SD can’t easily put the remux needed to get live streams to work with the Roku on their firmware, and don’t want to require folks to install a server just to get Roku’s to work. This is what HDHRFling and every other method to get HDHR streams on Roku does. Since we already have a server, it’s easy for us.

And in addition, Roku’s only support H264, so anything besides the Extend needs a transcode, something else you need a server for, which we can provide easily.

I do suggest Android TV’s though, they have the best codec support of any device currently.

Thanks a lot for the great info. I purchased an extend using my plex pass benefit just a couple minutes ago.

For me I always liked how roku was platform agnostic, and generally had a wide range of support. Price isn’t bad either, trying to equip a house with shields (amazon video support) gets expensive fast.

I just picked up a used Mi Box for $40 which is a decent Android TV set top.

Super excited for Roku TV support!

But no Amazon instant video on that correct? Afaik the shield is the only one with Amazon access unfortunately.

Not yet, but rumor has it they should be getting it.

What I’ve heard is Amazon won’t submit Instant Video to Google Play because they don’t want to be forced to give 30% of the prime $$ to Google, so they have to work with every vendor to get them to bake in Amazon Prime support in the ROM, which means its un updateable, so it has to be very well tested.

Man you are full of good news. Hopefully it does happen, if so I would make the jump. I could justify a shield for the living room but bedrooms and garage would get mi boxes.

Hey, I never said HOW LONG it’ll take for them to get it. But I too hope thats their excuse for why the 7.0 release on the Mi Box is taking so long…
BTW, there is workarounds to get it to work on XDA as well, which I used on my Shields before official support.

I too will be anxious to watch live TV via my Roku via a built-in feature. I’ve been using HDGrandSlam, a 3rd-party plugin for Plex, but I’d rather have something built-in. I have had hiccups with playback and transcoding issues with HDGrandSlam, especially if I am outside the home. Using my iPhone, I get a nearly instant perfect picture without hiccups, even when using cellular data since PMS 1.7.2.

once Roku support happens, maybe I can finally retire my TVHeadEnd/Kodi setup that exists solely for…that.

2017 is going great for television! TV in Plex…Xfinity has a roku app…what’s next?

Oh I know, I’m not counting on it but your post gave me some hope.

I’ve seen some work arounds but it’s not worth it to me.

I’ll wait it out for now, I’m not in much of a rush to by new media players.

It would be awesome to get livetv on my Roku’s as I have 3 roku boxes and a roku tv!

Right now I am just using the DVR function to record local tv and watch the episodes later.

Does anyone that does this already use anything to cut commercials out of the recordings?
