First off, I’m loving Plex DVR. Its been quite the process this month of getting my WinTV Quad HD card to work and realizing I needed to put my antenna in attic and playing with comskip and mcebuddy, etc. Great month of learning and really enjoying what Plex designed with the DVR and live TV.
Question: Plex team, when will support for Live TV playback and scheduling of DVR recordings be expanded to include Roku and/or Fire TV?
JUST a rough ETA. I’m not looking for exact dates and I completly understand how things go in the devlopment world (I run an IT department and dates and priorities ALWAYS change, I totally get and support that. So I’m only looking for a rough approximate time frame
Depending on that rough time frame will help me decide if I should just break down and go buy an Android TV media player or not. I use a Roku 3 90% of the time and Fire TV 10% of the time. Hoping to avoid going and buying another streaming device. My end goal is I want to make Roku 3 pass the “Wife Test”… Since she is comfortable and likes using the Roku 3, and she already uses Plex on the Roku 3 a lot, I would much prefer to get the Live TV and DVR programming guide / recording support running on the Roku 3. That will make my wife happy as the idea of trying to convince her to pull out her iPhone and schedule the recordings or watch live TV on there is not ideal.
BUT, if its going to be a while like a few months I don’t mind going and getting an Android TV so that we can start having the programming guide and live TV support immediately instead of waiting for the feature. But at the same time, if its only a few weeks out or within the next month, then I just assume wait until its available and not buy the Android TV.
My understanding is that currently Live TV viewing and viewing the programming guide / scheduling recordings is only available on iOS devices, Android TV, and via the Plex website app.
@ispaydeu don’t get an android tv box that doesn’t run android tv’s os. Most of those cheap boxes just run standard android.
Things like the shield, nexus player and Xiaomi Mi all run android TV and that’s the only platform supported of the two android os’s for dvr/live tv at the moment
@rsava said: @ispaydeu - Plex does not give timelines for development.
Not even rough estimates.
Not entirely true. =) I saw on another thread before posting this one that Apple TV support was expected to be released within the month per the CTO or CIO of plex and was mentioned on Twitter or some other social media. That’s what originally prompted me to inquire about the Roku and Fire TV.
I guess I was just more surprised when I first installed everything that the functionality wasn’t already there. I imagine there are more Roku and Fire TV devices out their being used for plex then there are people streaming Plex from iOS or watching from Android TV. (I could be seriously wrong on that assumption).so I was caught off guard when installing everything to not see the feature on my Roku which led me to check the forums and realize it never was. Oh well
@ispaydeu From what a software developer friend has told me, iOS (and related Apple platforms) are MUCH easier to write media based apps for then other platforms because of the integrated media player in iOS.
Now I would think Roku wouldn’t be too difficult since media is it’s entire reason for existence… But Roku is not the most powerful platform so that could be an issue.
New rokus are pretty powerful, and while not officially giving a timeline I know as soon as the dvr beta stuff started going around I and a few others inquired about an older card that was unsupported but fairly popular, they said they were going to look into it, and a few weeks later out pops an update and I am going
I don’t see why the live tv and regular plex transcoding would be any different, just fill a 30 second buffer and pull from it remotely, any decently powered pms should be able to handle it
I am also interested in finding out if PLEX ever intends to support their live TV service on Roku devices. Not looking for timeframe commitments - just some insight into development plans for Roku.
Honestly I wouldn’t buy anything other then the nVidia Shield with respect to Android TV.
I have an Apple TV, Fire TV (4K) and Fire TV Stick (older version). I also have a couple of 4K Smart TVs that have user install Plex Apps. Interestingly enough I now find that the Smart TV Plex apps are faster, more responsive and more stable then the Fire TV apps.
I acquired the Apple TV 32GB valued roughly at ~$150 USD for free as part of a promotion from Direct TV Now. I’ve since discontinued their serves but it wasn’t bad for ~$35 a month.
Given the abilities of the nVidia Shield I think its worth every penny at about ~$200 USD (to start).
Currently I am trying to wait it out until Apple TV live TV streaming becomes available, which should be soon-ish. Still, it was my understanding that the nVidia Shield didn’t receive support for time shifting when iOS did. Unforeseen technical issues can always arise so maybe Apple TV doesn’t get live TV for quite some time,…who knows?
