Improved EPG data for Australia

For all Australian users, good news!

Plex has been informed by their metadata provider that guide data for Australia has now been greatly improved. So whether you live in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Perth, Darwin, Hobart, or anywhere across Australia (including rural and regional Australia), you should be seeing much better data.

Please try it out, and let us know how you go!

Thanks Dave thats great news. Will give it a try. One thing I notice though is that many many shows still have blank cover art which makes it difficult to see which shows are which in the program guide. Is that something that Gracenote is looking into improving as well?

That’s on the Plex, side I believe. I know they’re working towards improving finding covers and other metadata for the guide, but no idea on when it’ll be ready, I’m afraid.

The other issue that I’m noticing in Australia is that Plex is misidentifying some recorded TV shows. I have PMS to automatically “optimise” all new recordings to an “optimised for TV” so they can play better on my Apple TV (as non optimised HD channel recordings don’t show a picture) but strangely Plex keeps misidentifying some of these optimised TV shows as movies.

Dave since you’re Australia as well, are you able to try to record “Ellen” and the travel show “Getaway” and “optimise for tv” and you’ll see that the optimised versions bizarrely don’t go in the same folder (as happens with other shows ) but instead go into the movies library and get random numbers as their titles or in the case of Getaway it is identified as Getaway the movie.

How do we report guide data issues for Europe?

@jayz78 Once it’s recorded, it’s not really guide data, but other metadata providers (like TVDB) at that point. With something like that, probably best to post in a new thread so it doesn’t get lost in here (and so we stay on topic  )

@Palmondo Just post in the Live TV & DVR section with information about your location, which guide you’re using, and what the issue is.

It’s a bit better but still having all the issues I was having before

  • no listings for most HD channels still.
  • ‘continue on another channel’ shows don’t get recorded.

Thanks for the feedback, I’d be interested in hearing others comments too. I’m using IceTV and it works flawlessly, so I wouldn’t want to switch back to Gracnote and get something potentially not as good.

@SHOCKWAVE Can you provide some information on what region you’re looking at, please?

I’m also unclear on what you mean by

‘continue on another channel’ shows don’t get recorded.

@DaveBinM looking at Melbourne-Australia.

So for example a show like ‘Better homes and Gardens’ gets split into two to accomodate for AFL but the guide doesn’t pick up that channel change and stops recording.

@SHOCKWAVE Did you delete your DVR, and then create it again and select the new guide? I’m seeing plenty of shows on HD channels for Melbourne (where I am as well).

The Better Homes and Gardens issue is a little more complex. Because they’ve split the episode in two (using the same data to identify the episodes), PMS thinks it’s already recorded it (somewhat understandably), and so it doesn’t pick up the second part because it thinks is the same episode. It’s pretty poor programming by Channel 7 there, but this sort of scenario is something that the developers are aware of. I have no idea how far it’s got, but it is on the radar.

@DaveBinM yes and I just did it again to make sure. Same deal with HD shows, some turn up, alot don’t. One prime example at the top of my head, Better homes and gardens. No HD listing at all.

Also I forgot to mention the updated guide ‘fix’ hasn’t changed the issue of some shows getting scraped incorrectly. This is a pretty big issue.

@SHOCKWAVE You mean this one, which shows up in the guide?

Do you mean scraped before or after recording? Irrespective of when it is, the guide changes and scraping data from metadata providers is quite separate.

@DaveBinM appreciate the screenshot mate, just checked it also shows up their but isn’t actually acknowledged as a compatible channel. ie, go into ‘limit to channel’ and it is nowhere to be found meaning it will not end up recording on that HD channel at all.

and I mean after recording - ie getting linked to the compatible tvdb show, I constantly have to ‘fix match’. Why can’t Plex seem to get this part right?

thanks

Any idea how many days out the guide looks at (is it next seven days)

I also, have the same issue with Better Homes and gardens split over two channels

@DaveBinM - any chance New Zealand is getting the same treatment?

Hi,

This update does seem to have fixed a long standing problem for recordings in Perth where the times in the guide were often offset by several hours (see https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/237180/incorrect-time-settings-for-recording). As of right now, the Plex TV guide is showing the correct times for programs on SBS, 7, etc in Perth whereas it wasn’t before.

Great, and thanks!

The Closed Captions are NOT getting recorded with any of the streams. What is wrong with this latest update??

@SHOCKWAVE I’ll need to wait until later in the week when there’s better guide data for Better Homes and Gardens, but I’ll see if I can reproduce not being able to select it here. It might be related to the fact that it’s showing simultaneously on 7 an 7HD, but I’m not sure. I’ll dive into it, and have a look.

As for things happening AFTER recording, that’s a separate process (and not really related to DVR - that works the same as it always has for adding media of any kind). However, in saying that, it doesn’t mean that it won’t improve over time, if the data in the guide improves as well. Matching can only work off what’s provided, and that’s partly dependent on what metadata the TV networks in Australia provide.

I’m not aware (nor do I have experience with) anything to do with closed captions, but as that’s not really related to the guide, that’s something that’s better handled in a separate thread.

@davehall Yes, I believe it’s about 7 days of data.

@jayt80 I’m afraid I don’t have any information on New Zealand at the moment, I’m only aware of changes for Australia.

@gmcallow Yay! I’m glad to hear that’s resolved your issues with the guide!
