Live TV EPG - The update you’ve been waiting for

While we at Plex often like to engage in passionate soliloquy or humorous narrative in our major announcements, today will be different, let’s just cut to the chase.

Beginning today Plex will return to providing program guide data from our previous partner, Gracenote, for users in the following countries; Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bermuda, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Honduras, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Uruguay, and USA.

Later this month we will be adding support for; Belgium, Hungary, India, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russia, and South Africa. If you are in one of these countries DO NOT attempt to upgrade until we announce support, you will lose your guide entirely.

While our migration is not yet complete, we feel that even in its current state it is superior to the experience using today’s guide data, specifically in the most critical areas of accurate program scheduling and proper sequencing of series.

How to begin using Gracenote guide data today

First, let’s get a few important points out of the way.

  1. While you’re free to switch from TiVo-provided data to Gracenote at your leisure, be aware that the Tivo EPG will run out at the end of this year (2020).
  2. Once you decide to switch from TiVo to Gracenote there is no going back.
  3. Make note of your series recordings as you will have to delete and recreate these in the Gracenote environment. We understand that this is less than ideal, but it’s the best way to guarantee that your recordings will function properly post-migration.
  4. A current limitation of the scheduler is that if a show does not appear in the current ~14 days of guide data it’s impossible to set a recording. We will be looking to resolve this issue in the coming year.
  5. If you are in Australia, Hungary, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, or Uruguay you will need to be running Plex Media Server version 1.21.0.3711 or newer.
  6. To migrate your DVR from TiVo to a Gracenote-based EPG, you will need to delete your DVR and recreate it. Assuming that you’re aware of the disclaimers mentioned above, it’s as simple as that. Once you’re up and running we’d encourage you to report any lineup issues or inaccuracies at the pinned thread found here.

Outstanding Issues

There are a few issues with guide data in the UK, namely inconsistencies with NEW flags and lineup changes recently made by Freeview that have not yet been propagated by Gracenote. We’ll also be working on some additional scheduling functionality like “record by team” which is still pending. We’re working on getting these fixed as soon as possible, and will continue to collaborate directly with Gracenote to ensure prime guide data quality.

Thank you for this.

I have followed the instructions (took a while). Is there any identifier that tells whether I am using the new guide or not?

One particular issue when the last guide was introduced was that it didn’t record the second half of films that had a 5 minute interval (typically on UK channels like ITV4, 5 Star) - you had to manually extend the recording time by the remaining time of the film. I have just tried a film tonight and it seems as though that still happens. It’s very irritating, particularly when scheduling multiple recordings because Plex originally thinks he has time for the recording and then re-adjusts after you’ve extended the time, often throwing other recordings out.

I’m therefore questioning whether I have guide data from the new provider or not but can’t see anything to distinguish.

I tried the update as well a couple of times in the early morning (UK) and I do not believe that the new guide data is being picked up either. After deleting and recreating the DVR, it still says ‘powered by Plex’ at the bottom of the guide (used to say Gracenote) and referencing particular shows that always had the same description for every episode of a series in TiVo still has that same description now. Also all of my future recordings are still present which we should lose when the change happens. Server version is the currently latest available beta.

Updated to Plex Media Server version 1.21.0.3711, will not light up “Continue” button after entering a postal code here in The Netherlands.

Selected Cable / Netherlands, then Nederlands, and postal code, “Continue” button not available, help?

This is my suspicion too.

I had similar initially and used another postal code which worked. It seems like not every code is being picked up.

You can tell if you are using Gracenote here in the UK if:

  • Some of the channel icons look different (ITV and ITV +1 are now more colourful but unfortunately there are also some dark and difficult to see icons as well)
  • There are icons for channels that didn’t have them before - Hochanda springs to mind for example
  • Some of the “recent” Freeview channel number changes have been reverted (in particular ITV Be +1 is currently mapped to channel 97 rather than 47, and horror to channel 70 rather than 68) - Gracenote are yet to process these updates
  • Sony Movies and Sony Movies Action now have intermission breaks in the middle of movies :frowning:

Thanks in which case, I appear to still be using the old provider, despite following the instructions above. On your last point though, that will be extremely annoying - I had hoped that this very long standing issue was going to be fixed by this move.

Got any example one that works? Mine does not, the 1008DG does not etc.

Apologies, I’m in the UK. I tried one London area post code that didn’t work, I then tried another which did.

The new version will not give you the Gracenote EPG. The release notes say:

(EPG) Reintroduce support for the following countries once the Gracenote provider is enabled

I think they may make a bigger deal of it than a comment in the release notes when Gracenote is (re)enabled.

Yes, but this thread is where they announced that it is actually enabled. It isn’t working for me.

My apologies - you are quite right. I thought this was a different thread.

I think the roll out may be staged - I tried deleting the DVR from my test server after my post this morning and updating to the v1.21.0.3711 release, and I too got the old Tivo based data.

I have since raised this with Plex and with my fellow beta testers and some of us are now seeing Gracenote based data for the UK.

There are still some outstanding issues - I know this was supposed to be one of the advantages of returning to Gracenote and I am unfortunately waiting to hear back about this one.

I hope I am not speaking out of tone here, but I think Plex felt it was best to start the roll out now that we are into December as the guide data, generally speaking, is better, the sequencing seems to be more reliable and there are more days worth of data for some channels than what we have been used to.

Thanks. If it is still being rolled out, fair enough, I’m happy to wait.

I’m really disappointed with the timing issue though - it seems it has long been considered that there is an acceptable work around so is low priority but I take the view that a work around is only acceptable for a limited time and eventually need to get fixed. As per my previous post, it is painful to schedule at times when it really shouldn’t be. Part of the reason is not being able to manually record but that is another issue.

Is there an official way to confirm that we are using the new EPG before we setup our recordings again?

Did a reset and channel scan and guide appears the same
All recordings kept ok
C5 HD has hang em hi set to record 70min - only the first part
Cambridge postcode
As mentioned previously it would be nice to have an easy way to know Gracenote was defiantly active rather than Tivo

Have a look at Neighbours on C5
If it has a S/E it is Gracenote, if it’s Date based it is Tivo

I Did another refresh - Still the old Tivo data
I will try again tomorrow
