Before I added Plex Pass and set up users, if I paused a video, it would stay paused (cut to screen saver) forever (well, at least 24 hours). Since the blu-ray player I use to run the plex client takes forever to start up, this was a good thing.
Now, when I pause a video, it looks like it times out to the user selection screen after maybe an hour, after which it’ll power off.
Is there a way to extend the timeout back to the way it used to be?
There is no need to ‘pause’ videos for longer periods. Even if you stop them, Plex will store the location where you left off and you can resume playback later - even on a different client.
The user selection screen is a security/parental control measure.
Managed users sre usually crated to control access of minors to content.
If you pause your client and leave the room, it’d be simple for a kid to press any button and watch anything it likes.
Each official Plex client has a preference named ‘Automatically Sign In’
Activate it. This will sign in the last user automatically.

… completely missing my point, which I explicitly specified in my question.
When I want to watch a movie on Plex, I have to:
- Turn on my Blu-Ray player
- Wait for it to connect to the internet (30+ seconds)
- Open “Opera TV”
- Wait for that to load
- Go to “My Apps”
- Hope that Vewd hasn’t lost the Plex app again
- Select Plex
- Wait for Plex to start up
- Find the movie I was watching
- Start it.
If I pause the movie here on the TV in my study where I am the only user, then to start watching it again I just have to:
- Click a button to get out of the screen saver
- Press “Play”
I have different profiles so that different users can have different preferences, favorites, etc. I have no interest in security or parental control, as my kids have moved out.
But apparently I’ll have to submit a feature request for the timeout on user profiles to be adjustable, since nobody had the foresight that the default behavior without profiles might be preferable to folks who decide to start using them.
Am I missing something. I have profiles and never has anything “timed-out”. I’ve had movies paused for 3-4 days. And I have friends with a very similar setup as mine who connect to me and will pause stuff for weeks. As @OttoKerner stated, each client is different. There might be a setting that will allow the “session” to stay open. It’s your Blu-Ray player. The Plex client on it probably sucks.

Even with profiles set up? If so, then yeah - it’s the client and time to get a Roku or Fire Stick. Thanks for the help!
