Multi disc in one ablum shows as multiple albums

I just resolved this for a box set album, and there was a small twist.

I noticed today Plex had separated the tracks by disc, even though I had the track numbers sorted already (one single ascending list.) Being familiar with how ID3 tags worked, I immediately figured the disc tags were in the files and sure enough, they were (I use MediaMonkey to do all my ripping/tagging). So, I just blanked out the Disc# tag on all the tracks. I refreshed the Plex library expecting to see it fixed, but it wasn't!

Here's what did work:

Once I went through the above and double checked after that the tracks didn't have any Disc# tag I decided I should get Plex to import this album from scratch again:

  1. I moved the album folder out of my library to a temp location
  2. Refresh Plex library, confirm album is gone
  3. Run: empty trash, clean bundles, and optimize (all three of these options are in the settings dropdown in the left pane on the home screen.) This is to ensure any/all leftover metadata/files are removed.
  4. Move album folder back to its original location
  5. Refresh Plex library
  6. Voila, entire set shows as a single album now, like it should!

Plex could probably improve its library refreshing process in this case, where you fix the tags after the tracks had previously been imported.

But aside from that, it's up to the users to tag their stuff. I think MediaMonkey is the best for this, and it's free. It will organize your folders and filenames too. You have to clean up stuff like having multiple artists like "The Cars" and "Cars", etc etc.
