I got Plex Pass and all the data are stored on a QNAP TS-453A.
My brother is just the next apartment and I was wishing to share with him some of my media. The QNAP allow to plug an extra Ethernet, I was wondering if I plug an ethernet cable from my brother network if setting up a Plex Media Player on his device , the Plex was able to find the PMS on his network too.
Yes, Plex can work with this.
If you setup your LAN network on one address range (e.g. 192.168.0.x) and he sets up his LAN network as anything else (e.g. 192.168.1.x, or even 10.x.x.x) so you don’t collide with each other, you can then tell PMS to treat both networks as if local.
Settings - Server - Network - Show Advanced.
LAN Networks
Comma separated list of IP addresses or IP/netmask entries for networks that will be considered to be on the local network when enforcing bandwidth restrictions. If set, all other IP addresses will be considered to be on the external network and will be subject to external network bandwidth restrictions. If left blank, only the server’s subnet is considered to be on the local network.
- Setup your LAN networks as I shared above
- Add your brother’s network in Settings - Server - Network - LAN networks
- You invite your brother to share your PMS library through his Plex account.
- Your brother accepts your invitation.
