To use plex without internet connection

Server Version#: latest on QNAP
Player Version#: latest on my devices

question: I use plex on my idevices and on my smart-tv
The server is installed on a QNAP NAS

Today my internet connection was off, and even if clients and server are on the same local network etc I discovered that Plex is not working!!!
That’s pretty stupid. How can I use it in any case? thanx

Can’t currently help you, but in the same boat. Been paying for Plex for years, using it even longer. Internet went out yesterday, and was feeling pretty slick. All my neighbors aren’t going to be able to stream anything, but I got Plex. What should I watch, DVR stuff from OTA, movies, TVShows? I guess nothing, since it will no longer work. Samsung TV said something like “Remember, servers signed in use more security”. Took that as log it out, and then I can use on my local network. Negative, still not working. Worse, now its like I never even setup Live TV & DVR.

I really can’t understand reasons why!!! that’s totally insane

By looking at your account, you appear to have been a free user for 8 years?
There is no Plex Pass associated with this account.
Was there ever a Plex Pass associated with this account?

Insanity is expecting licensed codecs, which cost money, to be free.

What you see is how Plex has operated for a long time. (version 0.9.17.0)
I’m sorry if you’re just now noticing it.

So if you have plex pass and it used to work offline, how do we get it to work offline again? I lost my internet and was unpleasantly surprised to find that Plex didn’t work locally. I have a QNap NAS that I’ve been using for years not and UnRaid prior to that this is the first time I couldn’t connect to my movies locally. Very frustrating.

instead of using plex.tv or the app, have you tried logging in direct, using the web user interface?

use your ip address & the plex web ui port, usually 32400. Eg. if your lan ip address is 192.168.1.5, you would type into your web browser: 192.168.1.5:32400

It should work unless plex have changed something again, let me know how it goes

Security is enabled as soon as you sign into it. Most of the apps should cache credentials assuming you have not logged out/switched users or rebooted the player devices. (Smart TV apps.

In the servers network settings you can set certain IPs to not require auth such as the IPs of the devices. I personally have the IP of the computer I do server management on. then only if i need to I would add a device IP. (this largely depends if you live by yourself or not how you want to handle)

If secure connections is required on server then that won’t work with out internet so you can set in most players settings to allow fall beck to insecure when on the local network,

Agree but wouldn’t it be better to use for example your Router LAN IP/24 for certain IPs to not require auth such as the IPs of the devices.

In my case: 192.168.0.1/24

That would cover all LAN IP addresses on your home network.

noob here, may i ask what the /24 does?

id like to do the same thing, but my lan ips are 192.168.1.x, so would it work if i just swap the 0 with a 1, and write it into the ‘allowed IPs without auth’ box in the server Network settings?

The size of the prefix, in bits, is written after the oblique. This is called “slash notation”. There is a total of 32 bits in IPv4 address space. For example, if a network has the address “192.0.2.0/24”, the number “24” refers to how many bits are contained in the network. From this, the number of bits left for address space can be calculated. As all IPv4 networks have 32 bits, and each “section” of the address denoted by the decimal points contains eight bits, “192.0.2.0/24” leaves eight bits to contain host addresses. This is enough space for 256 host addresses. These host addresses are the IP addresses that are necessary to connect your machine to the Internet.

A network numbered “10.0.0.0/8” (which is one of those reserved for private use) is a network with eight bits of network prefix, denoted by “/8” after the oblique. The “8” denotes that there are 24 bits left over in the network to contain IPv4 host addresses: 16,777,216 addresses to be exact.

thanks! will that work in plex though (via server network settings)… do you have that /24 setting enabled on your own server?

I do indeed, you need to use your router LAN IP addressing. It maybe different.

If you use a LG in Plex client setting/ General there is also a Fall back to insecure/ Always settings

It is advised to not use your Subnet Mask address, it will work but it opens a world of possible security issues I’m told

It depends on if you live with others and how much you trust them. If you have room mates and let every IP get in without auth then that mean they can access the web app as the admin from any computer on the network without signing in. That’s why I only add the IP of my computer that no one else uses. and will add others IPs if I need them.

Yes in a case like that, I would be treading lighter. For me just Mum and Dad at home now.

cheers
