100% CPU caused by multiple plexscripthost.exe processes (even when idle)

Server Version#: 3.108.2
Player Version#:7.20.0 Android

Hi,

I hope someone can help. Over the last couple of months the Windows server I’m running Plex on (has been online for about 2-3 years now) keeps hitting 100% CPU and just staying there. This is when Plex is not streaming any video to any devices. Checking the task manager, the CPU is being used by multiple instances of plexscripthost.exe (about 6 to 10 of them), and no matter how long you wait the processes are not closed and the CPU does not go back down to normal idle. System is running like a complete dog at this point, and only fix is to manually terminate all the Plex processes or restart the system. A day or two later I’ll try and access a Plex video (normally pushing from Android app to Chromecast on my TV) and although I can browse the video catalog, it won’t cast as the server is at 100% again an requires intervention.

Server is running Windows Server 2016 running an i5-3330 with 8Gb RAM. System drive on SSDs and 8Tb of random disks used for storage with plenty of space using StableBit DrivePool. No physical or logical changes made to server in years, except regular patching and app updates.

What is causing Plex to do this and how might I stop it? I’ve switched off all the video thumbnail preview generation as I have read that may cause background processing.

Many thanks!

Not sure if this will fix your issue but turn off ipv6 on your network card and also in Plex should alleviate the CPU issue, Possibly.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. A couple of weeks ago I disabled IPv6 on both the network card settings on the server, and within the Plex Server app, but the CPU is still maxing out at 100%. The culprit is still multiple instances of PlexScriptHost.exe which are maxing out the CPU at 100% for days on end if I don’t manually force them to close.

Any other ideas please anyone?

Sorry that didn’t work, you might want to tag one of the mods or employees in the discussion and generally they’ll take a look at it. They get flooded with questions all day and they miss some:) Just look for one of the employees in a form that deals with CPU problems.
