Is 100 Mb upload enough for PMS with remote clients?
I usually have media with these specs:
1080p mostly (H264 and H265). Some 720p (old tv shows) and only a couple of 4K movies (H265).
EAC3, AC3, AAC mostly. Some media, DTS.
Only 2 remote clients. Both Apple TV (One 2nd gen and one 3rd gen located in another country). Very rarely will both devices be in use at the same time.
Bitrate, according to the Plex WEB UI seems to be between 20 Mbps (a few) and 1 Mbps (very few, really old or crappy stuff). Mostly it’s about 14 Mbps.
Would like to hear if 100 Mb would be acceptable. I may have the possibility to bump the upstream speed to 200 Mb but I’m not sure.
It’s not so much the resolution, but the bitrate of your files (mainly that of the video stream, since it is responsible for the largest share)
That sounds rather low bitrate. Good for compatibility with lots of client types, too.
That should be fine then, with 100 mbps upstream.
This could be an issue. The further away the client is, the larger the “network packet roundtrip time” becomes. (kinda similar to the “ping” time, but not exactly the same)
And this can have a large impact on all playback which is either Transcoded or Direct Stream.
It is not that critical with content which is Direct Played.
i.e. your best strategy is to have files which are 100% compatible with the abilities of the ATVs, so they can be Direct Played.
