1080p Sony TV incorrectly detected as supporting 4K

I have a 1080p Sony Bravia KDL-50W800C that is unable to play transcoded 4K movies unless I specify the local streaming limit to be 1080p 20mbps.

Plex just spins for a while before giving a generic error asking to check connection and try again.

Watching the dashboard on the server, nothing attempts to play.

When looking at the authorized devices on the Plex server, the TV is showing as “BRAVIA 4K 2015”, even though the TV is only a 1080p display.

I believe plex is trying to play the 4k files natively, even though the TV cannot play 4k or HDR files.

No issues direct playing any 1080p files is have.

Setting the local streaming quality isn’t exactly ideal as it will transcode larger 1080p files even though it doesn’t really need to.

Is there anyway to tell plex that it only supports 1080p either from the server end or the client end?

Any help would be appreciated.

Would you be able to provide your Android Logs after attempting to play a 4K file? Would you also be able to try playing a 4K H264 file to see if it can correctly start playback of that file?

I have attached logs that should include playing H265, H264, as well as non-HDR 4k content.
Testing with 4K H264 resulted in the same error message as H265 content.

Ok we found the issue, seems your devices H264 profile supports 4k but obviously cant display it, bit of an oversight on our side. I am filing an issue and can update you once a fix is done but for the mean time you can try one of these 2 things:

  1. Set the quality setting to 1080p 20Mpbs (obviously any 1080p above 20Mbps will also transcode though.)
  2. Try changing your H.264 Maximum level in advanced settings to something below 5.0.

I have been using it with the quality set to 1080p 20Mpbs and has been working well, so will continue for the time being.
