Hi Guys,
I have 2 different station on 17-1. Not the same channel, 2 completely different channel. I’m able to see both of them directly from my tv, how can I do the same from plex?
I have something close no idea how plex manages channels behind the scenes. However, if I put on my broadcast engineer hat from when I used to do that years ago (and apologize if I state anything that is already known, but i don’t know what is or isn’t known).
17-1 is a virtual channel defined by a physical channels PSIP info. I am guessing either a physical channel is not encoding their PSIP information correctly for the subchannels, a channel added or changed their subchannels and reassigned their virtual channels (which plex would not automatically know), or a different physical channel is encoding one of their subchannels and using another stations virtual channel designation in error. Is TV using the same antennae source as the tuner for plex? or using multiple (liek a mix of antenna and dish/cable?
[fuzzy thoughts on how plex dvr might interpret the transport streams and PSIP that I will not write out]
Try rescanning channels in plex dvr settings and see if that corrects the issue. Plex may* only only allow one entry for a virtual channel in its channel db table. I don’t really have a way to test that without an ATSC RF encoder.
Or try using an app for Hauppauge WinTV and see if that will show you both and look at physical channel as well as virtual channel assignments to get a better understanding of what the channels are and compare to the plex channel guide.
I am curious of where this occurring (broadcast market). Could check if any local stations have been doing changes and if they have any rescan notices. FCC may have those listed, too. If you feel comfortable, post the nearest large city and I can take a quick look at stations in that area (assuming US) and see if there is any info out there.
This happen in Montreal canada.
I just found that the missing channel should display 62.1
CJNT-DT , virtual channel 62.1 / UHF channel 17
The only one I’m able to see is CIVM-DT , virtual channel 17.1 / UHF channel 26
I apologize, I am not as familiar with canadian broadcast channel assignments so I am researching. I can see from online resources 17.1 as correct assignment for both CJNT-DT and CIVM-HD so both PSIP should be correct. and neither seem likely to have changed recently. (same virtual channel assignment in same market is not something I think happens in the states).
is there a Haupaugge app for nvidia shield to view what the tuner can do without plex?
Or on a PC…key being is the hauppauge putting the channels on the network correctly. I ask because if the Haupaugge has an issue and can’t see both, I don’t now how plex would. If the Haupaugge can see it, I have to bow out as it is most likely a plex issue I would not be able help with.
I will need try on my pc but my tv (without the Hauppauge) detect both on 17-1 too even if one is supposed to be 62.1.
I’m thinking that plex deal with this as if both are the same channel but different feed.
Is it possible that CJNT is detected as 17.1 cause is uhf channel is 17 even if the virtual channel should be 62.1?
Yes, it is possible depending on how the tuner is dealing with it. I misstated something earlier…it seems that CJNT may be encoding the virtual channel PSIP incorrectly or not at all, so interpretation of the transport stream is defaulting the the physical channel number to assign the virtual channel number. The tuner in a TV is going to tune to the physical channel and display whatever virtual channel is encoded in the transport stream for that channel and fail over to physical channel (I was not as involved with the consumer side back in my day). The hauppauge should do the same i would think, but might encounter some kind of issue when communicating the info to a device over the network (which would be a firmware issue/limitation with that tuner).
Hang in there, checking what the hauppauge is doing with its own app should point to whether it is a hauppauge issue feeding the network or a plex problem not interpreting what the hauppauge is putting on the network. If the Hauppauge is the issue, their support team may be to assist better. If it is plex, others here would need to help.
(Even though a deeper parallel issue could be that PSIP info broadcast by CJTV could be incorrect. Even if that is the case, the tuner and plex should be able to handle it.
Your TV can and doesn’t care, other devices should too. Could try contacting the station and ask them to confirm they are encoding the virtual channel number correctly. i think that it is the H.222 table of the stream. including weird details like that may get the question straight to an engineer at the station to look at and not fall on deaf ears of a programming manager. If that is the case, them correcting it and rescanning the channels may get rid of the symptoms you are experiencing, but still not fix the seed of the issue.)
