[3.0.45] App doesn't open

Launch the App, wait 8 seconds, press start button to go back to the start screen. Launch the app a second time, wait another 8 seconds, press start menu again and launch the app for the third time. This time it should work.

Does NOT work for me. Same result.

I installed the Beta also on my Surface - and there, the starting procedere takes a lot of time (several minutes) too. I have reset the Beta, but nothing has changed.

@blueJack92 if the app takes a long time but starts up, do PM me the logs and I’ll examine why.

@didier.danloy: please PM me the logs. Thanks.

I’ve tested a little bit and found out that the beta app doesn’t start on my 950 if the app is installed on the sd card. If i install the beta app on the internal storage sometimes the app doesn’t start at the first time but at the second try mostly it works.

That’s interesting @Martin.S. I’ll give that a try.

Hmm installed the Plex app on the SD card from scratch, but still got the welcome screen after a few seconds of splash screen.

I’ve reinstalled the beta app 3.0.49 and your right the app works great, I’ve no more crashes with a clean installation on my 950.

That’s great @Martin.S. Does that mean that without doing anything else, 3.0.49 started running fine? If so, can anyone else confirm that?

@pombeirp I used the clean installation (3.0.49) many times today and the app always started and worked fine, until i started using the music player.
During music playback I can reproduce crashes on the splashscreen. If a new song starts during Plex isn’t on top I have from one to several crashes on the splashscreen and sometimes i didn’t come back into Plex until I restart the phone.

Thanks for the very useful insight @Martin.S. Would you be willing to receive a private build with an attempted fix? If so, please DM me your Windows Store email.

I ended up publishing a new beta 3.0.50, @Martin.S with several changes to the communication with the background music player. Please let me know if it helped at all.

There’s still a small bug where the buttons don’t always reflect the correct playback state, this will be fixed on 3.0.51, fwiw

App still does not start with version 3.0.50.

@pombeirp First at all, thanks for your work :).
Only for information, I’ve update from 3.0.49 to 3.0.50 and i couldn’t open Plex, it always crashed at splashscreen. Restart of the phone doesn’t helped. After clean installation of 3.0.50 Plex worked again.

If the song switches during plex isn’t on top and I try to go back into plex I get a black screen for ~10 sec and the app crashes, the music still plays. After that I can open the app, it shows the splashscreen and works again.

I’ve tried something new out, I used instead of my Plex Server the Cloud Sync and it seems that I don’t have this problem at this constellation. But I just have a few albums on my Cloud Sync and a huge library on the Plex Server, don’t know if this helps.

At this moment I don’t know how this happened. During testing two times the music still plays, but the windows popup doesn’t show that and it was impossible to go back into Plex, it crashes on splashscreen. I’ll tell you more, if that happens again.

:frowning: @blueJack92, this is proving a difficult bug to track down. Do you mind sending me the logs again? I’ve added some more info, which might be useful in finding the issue.

Thanks for the info @Martin.S, I feel that your insights are taking us closer to finding the issue. What format is the music you’re playing? (trying to understand if maybe the issue is that we’re asking the server to transcode, instead of Direct Playing)

I’ve tried leaving the app playing FLAC songs for a couple of songs, and then opening the app again. As you mentioned there’s a wait of a few seconds, but then it asks me to select the user account and I can access the app (no crash) :confused:

@pombeirp More Informations for you,
on my phone i always activate auto sign in first, sorry maybe I should tell you that before. I now trying without auto sign in, but it seems to be still the same problem.

I can’t tell you what the Plex Server do, because the music player doesn’t appear under status->actual playback. The Video Player works and appears.

I tried now different file types with different bit rates and i had always the same problem. I uploaded/downladed and tested now the same albums on cloud sync, from my plex server and from my phone “This Device”. In the short of time i would say this problem just appears if i play it from my plex server.

My new problem depends with the old problem and the new version 3.0.50, it seems that sometimes the crash kill the background music player, but still play the music. I have to start groove and play something to come back into plex. Maybe it disappears with the old problem.

@pombeirp
During testing I recognized and realized today that the Plex beta app needs ~ 24 sec on the splash screen until the user account selection appear, if my plex server is selected. If I switch to cloud sync/this device, close plex and restart the app the splash screen just needs one second. The old Windows 8/8.1 apps just needed ~9 sec on the same server for starting. Maybe this plays a role, too.

@Martin.S hmm, that seems long. I just received a log from another user where he was seeing almost 2 minutes of startup time. From the logs it turned out to be the initialization of Cortana (not much we can do on our side to improve that, except doing it in the background and not delaying app initialization because of Cortana).

It would be interesting to see your logs after that happens, to see if it is also Cortana, or something else which is causing the delay.

Regarding playing from PMS: while playing music, can you check on https://app.plex.tv/web/app, go to Status (top right corner)/Now Playing to see if it says it is Direct Playing or transcoding?
