I posted this before I had PlexPass, but figured I would repost. Basically, as it stands now, I have to have both a 3D and 2D version of a movie if I want it on my TV and Phone. That has a lot of redundant space. I'd have to think that there is a way to make a SBS video play in 2D as well depending on the video. Could one side be played instead of both? At the very least, flattening them, so it's only listed once, and I pick 2D or 3D when I watch.
I doubt there will be an option to re-encode a Half SBS movie to only display 1/2 the image anytime soon. It would be quite a pain to achieve i imagine. The focus would more likely to try and get support for Full resolution 3d which will automatically support a 2d version.
You can have plex 'stack' the movie (if this is what you're asking) so it only shows once in the library and then give you the choice of which version you want to play. The only limit to this is that plex will not offer any 'friendly' names when choosing which version, it simply states the video encoding e.g. 'h264 8mbps.'
See naming guide for stacked file naming...

Ok, I was mistaken on how it encoded. I thought there'd be some way to get a SBS stream to only show the "left side" and therefore play 3D in 2D or whatever. I guess I could rework this then to better stacking, if as you said I can't differentiate between the 3D and 2D easily when stacked.
I would love something like this because I use plex on Android, iPad, PC, and a Samsung TV that is the only device with 3D support.
Plex is unable to recognize that neither my mobile phone, my iPad and my PC support 3D.
On PC I use another player that has the "3D to 2D" option to watch this 3D media, but for the Phone and the iPad I'm left with no alternatives. T_T
If only the player has the option to select if the device has 3D support... and it automatically convert 3D to 2D... it would make me one really happy user. ;-)
I hope you have this feature in consideration for future updates.
Thank you.
Half-SBS and Half-OU are a compromise to enable 3d playback on unsupporting players (e.g. plex at this time).
I think a far better investment will be to get full HD 3d working (once FFMPEG supports it).
Just updating this for anyone who finds it now. As I know Plex is based off of XBMC, and XBMC alpha (http://xbmc.org/xbmc-13-gotham-august-cycle/) now somewhat handles 3D, I'm hoping this'll come to Plex soon.
