Is it possible to play 3D Movies via Plex on a 3D-TV, are there any plans for the (near) future?
FFMPEG does not support it yet. And the last time Tokyovigilante spoke about FFMPEG he almost sounded like something else would be used in the future. Not entirely sure what he meant.

If you are referring to the 3D standard currently being adopted on TVs and Blu-Ray then this supposedly requires HDMI 1.4 support. As far as I have been able to find out, even the new Mac mini only supports HDMI 1.3.
This is not the complete story since the Play Station 3 can play Blu-Ray 3D titles but it gets round this by having the ability to update much of its firmware so that in effect it is HDMI 1.3 and a half
AV Receivers also need to support HDMI 1.4 so they can pass 3D through intact from the source input to the TV output.
Ancient 3D as provided by the old red and green glasses would work now in Plex.
While I can't speak for Plex, the assertion that polarized / shutterglass 3d requires HDMI 1.4 is incorrect.

Sounds mysterious.... ;). FFMPEG will be part of Plex for the forseeable future, its the only widespread and well-supported AV codec library around. Regarding 3D, I personally feel it is of limited utility, and I don't own or plan to own any 3D hardware any time soon. I doubt OS X will have support for it any time soon either. Regardless, if anyone is interested in working on it, we'd welcome the help.

Daniel, you need to set up your 3d tv manually in 3d tv mode using side by side option and it woll work just fine 
So that means playing a SideBySide 3D-Movie will result in having 1/2 of the horizontal Resolution, right ?
Playing a 1080p-3D-SBS gives me 960x1080 Pixels…?
Would someone care to elaborate on this. Is the half resoultion side by side stuff done to have non hdmi 1.4 players actually support 3D? I cant imagine the 3D movies being half res on bluray?
Also, are these files playable (and working as advertised) through plex now?
Okay I grabbed a few 3D releases off the net (purely for testing purposes) and here is my take.
There is something dubbed Half-SBS (Avatar 2009 3D Half-SBS 1080p x264) which uses the resolution you mention. When played in Plex and pressing "i", 1920x1080 is displayed. On a 2D TV it plays like two frames side by side as expected. Plex plays this flawlessly on my mid 2010 unibody minimum specked mini.
Then there is something dubbed Full-SBS (Bolt.3D.2008.BluRay.FULL.SBS.DTSHD.x264.dxva-EuReKA) which uses 1920x1080. When played in Plex and pressing "i", 3840x1080 is displayed. The aforementioned mini plays this file with a few framedrops, surprisingly good though, again, using Plex 9
I tried another movie, How.To.Train.Your.Dragon.3D.2010.BluRay.FULL.SBS.TrueHD.x264.dxva-EuReKA. Same video stats as Bolt, but with Dolby Digital Full HD. This movie plays without framedrops, but @ 12 fps (?!) and without anything but static for audio on my Sony TV. Im guessing the minis HDMI Bandwidth could be a limiting factor here.
Anyways, these tests were done to see what my mini could output using Plex 9. No test were done on an actual 3D TV.
I’ve played “two frame” files using VLC on a early 2009 Mac mini (dvi to hdmi, separate audio) and it worked in 3D on a Samsung Plasma. I’ll give it a go in Plex on the weekend.

The most popular way to play 3d at mo is like the above say, play the half sbs files. A full frame is 1080p made up of half the frame for the left eye and half the frame for the right eye. Once playing, via Plex/VLC … any media player really, you simply select sbs mode on your 3dtv set and it will split the 1 frame until 2 full frames, playing at double the framerate on the tv (like a 3d bluray). All the processing is done on the tv, you simply just play the 1080p file like you would of a 2d rip.
although it’s 960x1080p before stretching, it still looks great. 3d is gaining some momentum now, so look out for a good deal on a 3dtv set! Plasma is the way to go at the moment as LED/LCD tv’s have too much ghosting. LED’s/LCD’s can’t clear their pixels as fast as a plasma (my Panasonic is 600hz).
I bought an LG LED originally (200hz) and returned it for the Plasma. Hope this helps!
Hi guys if I may contribute, firstly may I say plex is amazing, Can’t thank the plex team enough for such a brilliant solution. 3D sbs works on plex with a 3D tv, however it will be nice to see a 3D option menu on the PLay paus info panel where plex can switch its amazing user interface to eith SBS or Over and under, so one could switch plex to SBS then switch the TV to sbs and watch the movie, what this may allow in theory is a play paus menu in 3D and subtitles display in 3d as well, hope this makes sense
