Hey Devs, just wanted to see what kind of timeline is out there in regards to support for 3rd party skin developers? I think the die hard PHT users (like myself) would find it easier to migrate in the future and play with PMP a little more if we had more community, user features integrated like PHT. I know it’s probably a “small” feature when you have so much more to focus on like great playback and all that, but would appreciate any information you have.
Cheers,
It’s to early to tell yet. Our current priorities are: 1) stop crashing / breaking 2) get great playback 3) add missing features 4) add theming / skinning. We want to have feature parity before we move to theming phase because otherwise we run the risk of doing working in a certain way for skinning and having to go back on decisions when we add new features. I would say that we are looking in the timespan of “months” instead of “weeks”. We will definitely keep you guys and third-party skinners informed as we get closer to introduce this.
Thanks for the info and yeah I expected it to be months down the line. PMP requires some tweaking in other areas that take priority as I’m aware. As long as you don’t abandon the idea of skinning/theming from 3rd party contributors we are a ok!
- Having view modes for individual sections like PHT will be a nice addition in the long run as well.
@tobiashieta Since we are about 7 months into the future now, how far away is the theming and skinning phase do you think? I hope @DeadEyeFlint @aeonx @pecinko and others are still interested in skinning/theming for PMP when the time comes

Almost 8 months have passed since he said that. Would be nice to know if they plan on having theming skinning be an option by end of this year.
The real answer is “I don’t know.”. We thought we would have the new UI in place already, but other things got in the way and it didn’t happen as quick as we would hope. So me saying anything now about when theming is going to come around is going to be pretty useless unfortunately.
But we are finally getting somewhere with the UI, stay tuned

Ok no problem. Should we expect the new UI in the next version or is that a long way off too?
And please also add the option to hide thumbnails and plot for unwatched episodes in PMP. I know you guys don’t like adding user options much but it’s a really useful one

Why are you continuing to ask for ETA’s when Plex categorically do not give them? No wonder they don’t give any, heavens forbid you would bite their neck off if they missed a deadline!

Because that’s what users are supposed to do aren’t they? My goodness no wonder so many have left the forums over the last year. Ask about when something may possibly roll out and you as a user get questioned and beheaded lol.

No, it’s not what users are supposed to do. It’s not our business to know when something comes out. It’s theirs. It’s been talked about multiple times. Not our fault you didn’t search the forums first. It’s been stated multiple times there are no eta’s. A few seconds of searching would’ve shown you this.
I don’t think any software developer ever gives ETAs, there are far too many unknowns (said after spending 8 hours at work fixing one bug!).

So the people who are actually using the product shouldn’t know when changes and fixes are coming out? Seems backwards to me. I could see if I was trying to lock @tobiashieta into a specific date but I wasn’t. Asking if he would release a preview of new GUI in the next release or later releases would still leave the ETA up in the air unless he said it was ready for the next release.
@DaveBinM I actually know some that do as I use many different software companies who do give some kind of ETA’s beforehand. Sometimes they will be very general like “we plan to release version 2.x.x in the next few weeks” or something along those lines. Doesn’t have to be a specific date, but a little window into the timeframe in my opinion does the developer/user relationship some good

ETA’s for bugfixes? Hell no. ETA’s for product redesigns? Hell no! Last time I checked, next release is a date…
I check back in here many months later, and some people (they know who they are) just still can’t stop being a major pain in the butt.

No, next release is not a date unless they give it one smart guy. Next release could be next week or next month or way down the line. So like I said it’s not committing to any specific date. If you don’t want to know about when changes are coming thats fine but don’t haggle me for wanting to know.

There is nothing to contribute to this thread, Mr. Important. You have been told numerous times Plex don’t announce ETAs. So there is nothing to discuss here. At all.

There IS something to discuss here for people who like the skinning/theming aspect Plex has always had alongside the desktop player. Just because YOU don’t want to discuss theming and skinning and POSSIBLY know when it might make it’s way into PMP, doesn’t mean I or others don’t want to know.
The guys who really put a lot of effort into skins for PHT hopefully are still around when the time comes to skin/theme for PMP. So for me bringing this thread back up 7-8 months after @tobiashieta listed the steps it would take for theming support seemed like a good idea. Especially since PMP is actually operating pretty well at the moment.
Sure, no problem asking about it. But if you are told 7-8 months later that there is still no ETA, you could just leave it at that instead of dragging it further. Tobias stated he doesn’t know. Period. End of story. Plex will announce it when they are ready.
