401 Unauthorized

Server Version#:1.40.2.8395-c67dce28e
Player Version#:

Installed/updated old server with a new and I’m getting error “401 Unauthorized” when I try to open the server via the Plex icon in the system tray.

Method 2.2 You need to reclaim your server, but don't dare to touch the Windows Registry
and then
New Claiming Requirement for Windows
to claim it again.

If your server runs on a Windows Server Edition, you want Plex install fix for Windows Server (Claim issue) for the claim procedure instead.

I just followed those instructions and get the same error message.

Are you on a Windows server edition?
Which web browser are you using?
Are you opening the web page on the same machine as the server is running? (i.e. is the server running on the local machine and not remote and not within a virtual machine?)

Not Windows Server. I’m on Windows 11. I’m using Chrome. I’m trying to open it on the same machine as it is running on.

Which web browser addons are installed in Chrome? Have you tried to use Chrome’s “incognito” mode?

I don’t have any addons. I just tried incognito mode, but when I click on “Open Plex” from the sys tray icon it just using regular Chrome browser not Incognito mode.

Simply use http://127.0.0.1:32400/web when in incognito mode

Now if I go to Plex.tv I can log into my account, but it’s now telling me it can’t find my server.

Yes, you need to claim your server into your user account.
That’s what the second part of the procedure is about.

Ok…did that. It’s now just spinning the Plex circle…

Do you have a stable working internet connection? It needs one for the process.

Are you running any other 3rd-party software, like anti virus, firewalls, or ad blockers, or “privacy enhancers” in your local network or on your machine? Stuff like that can heavily interfere.

I clicked on my server while the circle was spinning at I get, “Not Authorized…you can claim it by clicking on Open Plex from the menu”. I did that and it takes me to 401 Not Authorized. This is a freaking PITA…smh.

Yes, great connection and no 3rd party software. Didn’t have a problem with my old server.

Was that on the same machine?

Take a look into C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex and also into C:\Program Files\Plex
Do these folders both exist?
If so, do they both contain a subfolder named Plex Media Server?

Don’t do that. Let it spin until the procedure is either successful or times out.

The claim article also describes an alternative method using a html file. Have you tried that?

Totally different box. I build a new box just for Plex. I just went through the procedure again and I’ll let it time out this time or whatever it will do.

That is impossible, because 127.0.0.1 always points to the local machine. It’s a synonym for “localhost”.

You asked if it was on the same machine. This new instance of PMS is on an entirely new device. I don’t see how that’s impossible. BTW…circle still spinning.

While waiting for the spinning to stop and looked into this., (x86) does not have a folder called Plex nor PMS, but C:\Program Files\Plex does.
