Hi,

I have a HP version 8 micro server which has been my Plex server for ages.

recently I logged in to the server because it wasn’t coming up when I logged into the webpage.

I read a few forums that said I need to claim the server. But when I open the webpage interface it says server isn’t installed.

I uninstalled and rebooted without any changes. Even deleted the registry keys for Plex and reinstalled and then it allowed me to log in using the machines IP but said “not authorized - you do not have access to this server”.

I i med on the “why am I getting locked out” forum post . Then it said I should have backed up the registry (whoops)

my question is what can I delete to just start from scratch. I’m sick of waisting time on this. Happy to just start a new server as it’s very basic with only three shares (movies, tv and music).

Claiming the server doesn’t work like that anymore: New Claiming Requirement for Windows
Careful to use a regular web browser without 3rd-party browser add-ins.

Ensure that you have installed the 64bit version of Plex Server. (the binaries should be in C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server
and NOT in C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server)

The installed app is called “Plex Media Server”. If you only have an app which is simply called “Plex”, you don’t have the server installed.

I think I may have some authorisation issue. I reinstalled the server, deleted the registry keys, reinstalled and when I try to log in using my Plex credentials the “wheel” spins on the screen and then says an unknown error has occurred. This has been happening since the problem occurred.

I can’t even log into the Plex.tv site. “Unknown error”.

I can access the page but when I press the sign in button it doesn’t let me. I had to use my iPhone to post this message and read.

any ideas?

Are you using any 3rd-party Internet filter / ad-blocker / privacy enhancer apps or tools?
Did you enable any feature of the same kind in your ISP’s settings, or in the settings of your router?

Do you employ some kind of DNS-based internet filter?

Is there VPN software in play?

Have you tried to set the “DNS Server” to either 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8?
(Preferably in your router. But for a start, you can do it in the properties of the network connection of your server machine.)

Using Firefox. It’s a headless system and I’m logged in via windows Remote Desktop. Using same credentials I’ve used for nearly a decade.

Is it possible my account has been compromised. There was an issue some times ago when accounts were hacked. I’m pretty sure I reset the password as per the Plex request .

It’s weird I can login fine on my iPhone. Gotta be some windows issue.

That only tangential related to my above questions.

Quite unlikely.

Please peruse all 4 of my questions above.

No VPN used. Not a single piece of software installed other than windows and Plex and Firefox.

it’s not a router issue because I can use my Mac to log into the Plex.tv page and it works fine. The network settings are the same as they’ve been for years and years without issues.

I can log into the server using my mac but again it says that user is not authorised. Same account I’ve used for years and years.

When you log in, you don’t login to your server.
You are logging in to your plex.tv user account.

Your plex account currently has no servers connected to it. So it cannot show a server after you open any Plex clients.
You have removed all of them a few hours ago.

Perform this procedure in order to re-connect your installed server to your account. You need to reclaim your server, but don't dare to touch the Windows Registry
After step 8) don’t forget to follow the link for the claiming instructions.

Ps . Yes it’s the 64 bit version installed in the correct folder

Hi,

I made the changes to the registry using the link you gave me. Restarted Plex and I get the same issue when I select “open Plex” the url 12.7.0.0.1 comes up and the wheel just spins and it refreshes indefinitely. I checked using Edge instead of Firefox and it does the same thing, wheel just spins and nothing happens.

when I used the local IP adresss and go to http://192.168.100.15:32400/web I can log into the account but again it says “not authorised”

Please try the alternate method of claiming the server.

Did you make the “DNS Server” setting?

I tried the alternative method and get the same spinning icon under the Plex logo. Just goes on indefinitely. I’m hesitant to change the network settings for two reason.

  1. it’s the same static IP settings it’s been for years and
  2. It’s a headless system and I don’t want to risk loosing connectivity because I don’t have a VGA monitor cable handy

This is not about changing the IP address of your server. It can remain at its current IP.
It is about the “DNS Server”. And it is crucial for operation of Plex, because claiming and remote access both depend heavily on proper, up-to-date DNS records. Some ISPs are known handle that not sufficiently well, or even try to filter domains. Or replace unknown domains with paid “alternatives”.

HI,

I managed to fix it. You were on the right track.

I tried to make the changes to the DNS server (router) you suggested and couldn’t access the router. I then tried to ping it. I tried on my mac and the plex server and couldn’t ping it from either.

I then thought maybe it’s an issue with the network settings so used an ethernet cable using DNS. This is when I found out the IP on both the plex server were previously set to 192.168.100.X however after connecting via the cable using DHCP it was 192.168.1.X

It turns out when I was away for work my partner had to reset the router using the default 192.168.1.1 settings while both the Plex server & my mac still used a static IP in the 192.168.100.1 range which was why they could communicate.

To be honest I’m really surprised anything worked but I guess the server and my mac were okay using the same details and using the DHCP for the DNS server.

Anyway thanks for your patience and helping me get to the bottom if it.

Have a great day/night T
